11|1|Alif, Lam, Ra. A Scripture whose Verses were perfected, then elaborated, from One who is Wise and Informed.
11|2|That you shall worship none but God. “I am a warner to you from Him, and a bearer of good news.”
11|3|“And ask your Lord for forgiveness, and repent to Him. He will provide you with good sustenance until a stated term, and will bestow His grace on every possessor of virtue. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the punishment of a grievous Day.”
11|4|“To God is your return, and He is Capable of all things.”
11|5|They wrap their chests to hide from Him. But even as they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He knows what lies within the hearts.
Abu Ja’fara sws said: ‘Jabir Bin Abdullah informed me that when the Polytheists
used to pass by the Rasool Allah saww, they would incline their heads and cover their
heads with their clothes so that the Rasool Allahsaww would not see (recognise) them.
So Allah azwj Mighty and Majestic Revealed: “[11:5] Now surely they fold up their
breasts that they may conceal (their enmity) from Him; now surely, when they
use their garments as a covering, He knows what they conceal and what they
make public”.
11|6|There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance depends on God. And He knows where it lives and where it rests. Everything is in a Clear Book.
11|7|It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days—and His Throne was upon the waters—in order to test you—which of you is best in conduct. And if you were to say, “You will be resurrected after death,” those who disbelieve would say, “This is nothing but plain witchcraft.”
H 337, Ch. 20, h7
Muhammad ibn al-Hassan has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn Mahbub
from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Kathir from Dawud al-Riqqyy who said the following:
“Once I asked (Imam) abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine
supreme covenant, about the words of Allah, ‘. . . His Throne
existed on water . . . (11:8).’ The Imam asked, ‘What do they say
about it?’ I said, ‘They say that al-‘Arsh (the Throne) was on the
water and the Lord was on top of it.’ The Imam then said, ‘They
have said a lie. Whoever thinks as such has considered Allah as
being carried and has described Him with the qualities of the
creatures which means that the thing that carries Him is stronger
than Him.’ I then asked, ‘May Allah keep my soul in your
service, please explain it to me.’ The Imam then said, ‘Allah
made water to carry His religion and His knowledge before there
were the earth, the heavens, the Jinn, the human beings, the sun
and the moon. When Allah willed to create the creatures He
spread them before His-Self and said to them, “Who is your
Lord?” The people who spoke first were the Holy Prophet and
Amir al-Mu’Minin Ali and all ‘A’immah (plural of Imam),
recipient of divine supreme covenant. They all said, ‘You are
our Lord.’ He then made them to carry the religion and the
knowledge. Then He spoke to the angels saying, ‘These are the
carriers of My religion and knowledge, My trustees in My
people and they are the ones from whom questions will be
asked.’ Then Allah spoke to the children of Adam saying,
‘Acknowledge that Allah is the Lord and acknowledge that these
people are the Authorities (of Allah) among you and that
obedience to them is obligatory.’ They said, ‘O our Lord, we
acknowledge.’
“Allah then told the angels, ‘Bear witness to this.’ The angels
said, ‘We bear witness so that they will not say tomorrow, “We
were not aware of this or say that our forefathers worshipped
idols before us and we were only their offspring. Will You then
destroy us just because of what the followers of falsehood have
done?” O Dawud, our Divine Authority over them was strongly
stressed upon at the time of the covenant.’”
H 658, Ch. 45, h2
Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa
from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from Ali ibn Ri’ab from Sadir al-Sayrafi who has
said the following:
“I heard Humran ibn A’Yan ask abu Ja‘far, recipient of divine
supreme covenant, about the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the
Most High Allah, ‘. . . One Who is the Originator of the heavens
and the earth . . .’ (6:101) Abu Ja‘far, recipient of divine
supreme covenant, said, ‘Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High,
originated all things through His knowledge. It was
unprecedented. He invented the heavens and the earths and there
were no heavens and earths before. Have you not considered the
words of Allah, the Most High, ‘. . . His Throne existed on
water. . . .’ (11:7)
“Humran then said, ‘Have you considered His words, Majestic
is Whose name, “He knows the unseen and He does not allow
anyone to know His secrets. . . .”’ (72:26) Abu Ja‘far, recipient
of divine supreme covenant, then said, ‘Except those of His
Messengers whom He chooses.’ (72:26) Muhammad, recipient
of divine supreme covenant, I swear by Allah, was one of those
whom Allah had chosen. However, there are His words: ‘He
knows the hidden facts.’ The facts that Allah, the Most Holy, the
Most High, knows what is hidden from His creatures of the
things that He measures and determines and decrees in His
knowledge before creating it and before assigning to the angels,
it is because of the following. O Humran, there is the knowledge
withheld before Him in which He has a wish. He then decrees it
when He wills. Al-Bada’ may take place in it and He then will
not decree it. The knowledge that, however, Allah, the Most
Holy, the Most High, measures and determines and approves is
the knowledge that reaches the Messenger of Allah and then it
reaches us.”
11|8|And if We postponed their punishment until a stated time, they would say, “What holds it back?” On the Day when it reaches them, it will not be averted from them, and what they used to ridicule will besiege them.
11|9|If We give the human being a taste of mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, he becomes despairing and ungrateful.
11|10|And if We give him a taste of prosperity, after some adversity has afflicted him, he will say, “Troubles have gone away from me.” He becomes excited and proud.
11|11|Except those who are patient and do good deeds—these will have forgiveness and a great reward.
11|12|Perhaps you wish to disregard some of what is revealed to you, and you may be stressed because of it, since they say, “If only a treasure was sent down to him, or an angel came with him.” You are only a warner, and God is Responsible for all things.
11|13|Or do they say, “He invented it?” Say, “Then produce ten chapters like it, invented, and call upon whomever you can, besides God, if you are truthful.”
11|14|But if they fail to answer you, know that it was revealed with God’s knowledge, and that there is no god but He. Will you then submit?
11|15|Whoever desires the worldly life and its glitter—We will fully recompense them for their deeds therein, and therein they will not be defrauded.
11|16|These—they will have nothing but the Fire in the Hereafter. Their deeds are in vain therein, and their works are null.
11|17|Is he who possesses a clear proof from his Lord, recited by a witness from Him, and before it the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy? These believe in it. But whoever defies it from among the various factions, the Fire is his promise. So have no doubt about it. It is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.
H 493 Ch. 9, h3
Through the same chain of narrators as that for the above Hadith, it is narrated
from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Ahmad ibn ‘Umar al-
Hallal who has said the following:
“I asked Imam abu al-Hassan, recipient of divine supreme
covenant, about the meaning of the words of Allah, the Most
Holy, the Most High, ‘Should they be compared with those
whose Lord has given them a guidance which is testified by a
witness from among their own people . . .’ (11:17) He (the
Imam), recipient of divine supreme covenant, said, ‘It refers to
(Amir al-Mu’minin) Ali who, recipient of divine supreme
covenant, testified to support the Messenger of Allah, recipient
of divine supreme covenant, and the Messenger of Allah has
supporting evidence from his Lord.’”
11|18|Who does greater wrong than he who fabricates lies about God? These will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, “These are they who lied about their Lord.” Indeed, the curse of God is upon the wrongdoers.
11|19|Those who hinder others from the path of God, and seek to make it crooked; and regarding the Hereafter, they are in denial.
11|20|These will not escape on earth, and they have no protectors besides God. The punishment will be doubled for them. They have failed to hear, and they have failed to see.
11|21|Those are the ones who lost their souls, and what they had invented has strayed away from them.
11|22|Without a doubt, in the Hereafter, they will be the biggest losers.
11|23|As for those who believe and do good deeds, and humble themselves before their Lord—these are the inhabitants of Paradise, where they will abide forever.
H 1010, Ch. 95, h 3
Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-
Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn al-Mukhtar from
Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following:
“Once I said to abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme
covenant, ‘Among us there is a man called Kulayb. Nothing
comes from you but that he says, “I submit to it.” Thus, we call
him, “Kulayb, the submissive.” The narrator has said that the
Imam expressed kindness toward him and prayed and then
asked, ‘Do you know what submission is?’ We remained silent.
The Imam said, ‘That, by Allah, is al-Ikhbat in the words of
Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Gracious, “The righteously
striving believers who are submissive before their Lord, will be
the dwellers of paradise wherein they will live forever.’” (11:23)

11|27|The notables who disbelieved among his people said, “We see in you nothing but a man like us, and we see that only the worst among us have followed you, those of immature judgment. And we see that you have no advantage over us. In fact, we think you are liars.”
11|28|He said, “O my people, Have you considered? If I stand on clear evidence from my Lord, and He has given me a mercy from Himself, but you were blind to it, can we compel you to accept it, even though you dislike it?”

11|30|“O my people! Who will support me against God, if I dismiss them? Will you not give a thought?”

11|31|“I do not say to you that I possess the treasures of God, nor do I know the future, nor do I say that I am an angel. Nor do I say of those who are despicable in your eyes that God will never give them any good. God is Aware of what lies in their souls. If I did, I would be one of the wrongdoers.”
11|32|They said, “O Noah, you have argued with us, and argued a great deal. Now bring upon us what you threaten us with, if you are truthful.”

11|36|And it was revealed to Noah: “None of your people will believe, except those who have already believed, so do not grieve over what they do.”
11|37|“And build the Ark, under Our eyes, and with Our inspiration, and do not address Me regarding those who did wrong; they are to be drowned.”
11|38|As he was building the ark, whenever some of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, “If you ridicule us, we will ridicule you, just as you ridicule.”
11|39|“You will surely know upon whom will come a torment that will abase him, and upon whom will fall a lasting torment.”
11|40|Until, when Our command came, and the volcano erupted, We said, “Board into it a pair of every kind, and your family—except those against whom the sentence has already been passed—and those who have believed.” But those who believed with him were only a few.
11|41|He said, “Embark in it. In the name of God shall be its sailing and its anchorage. My Lord is indeed Forgiving and Merciful.”
11|42|And so it sailed with them amidst waves like hills. And Noah called to his son, who had kept away, “On my son! Embark with us, and do not be with the disbelievers.”
11|43|He said, “I will take refuge on a mountain—it will protect me from the water.” He said, “There is no protection from God’s decree today, except for him on whom He has mercy.” And the waves surged between them, and he was among the drowned.
11|44|And it was said, “O earth, swallow your waters,” and “O heaven, clear up.” And the waters receded, and the event was concluded, and it settled on Judi, and it was proclaimed: “Away with the wicked people.”
11|45|And Noah called to his Lord. He said, “O My Lord, my son is of my family, and Your promise is true, and You are the Wisest of the wise.”
11|46|He said, “O Noah, he is not of your family. It is an unrighteous deed. So do not ask Me about something you know nothing about. I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorant.”
11|47|He said, “O My Lord, I seek refuge with You, from asking You about what I have no knowledge of. Unless You forgive me, and have mercy on me, I will be one of the losers.”
11|48|It was said, “O Noah, disembark with peace from Us; and with blessings upon you, and upon communities from those with you. And other communities We will grant prosperity, and then a painful torment from Us will befall them.”
11|49|These are some stories from the past that we reveal to you. Neither you, nor your people knew them before this. So be patient. The future belongs to the pious.
11|50|And to Aad, their brother Hud. He said, “O my people, worship God, you have no other god besides Him. You do nothing but invent lies.”
11|51|“O my people, I ask you no wage for it; my wage lies with Him who originated me. Do you not understand?”
11|52|“O my people, ask forgiveness from your Lord, and repent to Him. He will release the sky pouring down upon you, and will add strength to your strength. And do not turn away and be wicked.”
11|53|They said, “O Hud, you did not bring us any evidence, and we are not about to abandon our gods at your word, and we are not believers in you.”
11|54|“We only say that some of our gods have possessed you with evil.” He said, “I call God to witness, and you to witness, that I am innocent of what you associate.
11|55|Besides Him. So scheme against me, all of you, and do not hesitate.
11|56|I have placed my trust in God, my Lord and your Lord. There is not a creature but He holds it by the forelock. My Lord is on a straight path.
11|57|If you turn away, I have conveyed to you what I was sent to you with; and my Lord will replace you with another people, and you will not cause Him any harm. My Lord is Guardian over all things.”
11|58|And when Our decree came, We saved Hud and those who believed with him, by a mercy from Us, and We delivered them from a harsh punishment.
11|59|That was Aad; they denied the signs of their Lord, and defied His messengers, and followed the lead of every stubborn tyrant.
11|60|And they were pursued by a curse in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Aad blasphemed against their Lord—so away with Aad, the people of Hud.
11|61|And to Thamood, their brother Saleh. He said, “O my people, worship God, you have no god other than Him. He initiated you from the earth, and settled you in it. So seek His forgiveness, and repent to Him. My Lord is Near and Responsive.”
11|62|They said, “O Saleh, we had hopes in you before this. Are you trying to prevent us from worshiping what our parents worship? We are in serious doubt regarding what you are calling us to.”
11|63|He said, “O my people, have you considered? If I stand upon clear evidence from my Lord, and He has given me mercy from Him, who would protect me from God, if I disobeyed Him? You add nothing for me except loss.”
11|64|“O my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you. Let her graze on God’s land, and do not harm her, lest an imminent punishment overtakes you.”
11|65|But they hamstrung her, and so He said, “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. This is a prophecy that is infallible.”
11|66|Then, when Our command came, We saved Saleh and those who believed with him, by a mercy from Us, from the disgrace of that day. Your Lord is the Strong, the Mighty.
11|67|And the Scream struck those who transgressed, and they became motionless bodies in their homes.
11|68|As if they had never prospered therein. Indeed, Thamood rejected their Lord, so away with Thamood.
11|69|Our messengers came to Abraham with good news. They said, “Peace.” He said, “Peace.” Soon after, he came with a roasted calf.
11|70|But when he saw their hands not reaching towards it, he became suspicious of them, and conceived a fear of them. They said, “Do not fear, we were sent to the people of Lot.”
11|71|His wife was standing by, so she laughed. And We gave her good news of Isaac; and after Isaac, Jacob.
11|72|She said, “Alas for me. Shall I give birth, when I am an old woman, and this, my husband, is an old man? This is truly a strange thing.”
11|73|They said, “Do you marvel at the decree of God? The mercy and blessings of God are upon you, O people of the house. He is Praiseworthy and Glorious.”
11|74|When Abraham’s fear subsided, and the good news had reached him, he started pleading with Us concerning the people of Lot.
11|75|Abraham was gentle, kind, penitent.
11|76|“O Abraham, refrain from this. The command of your Lord has come; they have incurred an irreversible punishment.”
11|77|And when Our envoys came to Lot, he was anxious for them, and concerned for them. He said, “This is a dreadful day.”
11|78|And his people came rushing towards him—they were in the habit of committing sins. He said, “O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear God, and do not embarrass me before my guests. Is there not one reasonable man among you?”
H 10156, Ch. 186, h 7
Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from Ya’qub bin Shu’ayb who
has said the following:
“About the words of Lot, ‘These are my daughters and they are cleaner and pure,’ (11:78) abu ‘Abd
Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘He offered them for marriage.’”
11|79|They said, “You know well that we have no right to your daughters, and you know well what we want.”
11|80|He said, “If only I had the strength to stop you, or could rely on some strong support.”
11|81|They said, “O Lot, we are the envoys of your Lord; they will not reach you. So set out with your family during the cover of the night, and let none of you look back, except for your wife. She will be struck by what will strike them. Their appointed time is the morning. Is not the morning near?”
11|82|And when Our command came about, We turned it upside down, and We rained down on it stones of baked clay.
11|83|Marked from your Lord, and never far from the wrongdoers.
11|84|And to Median, their brother Shuaib. He said, “O my people, worship God; you have no god other than Him. And do not short measure or short weight. I see you in good circumstances, but I fear for you the agony of an encompassing Day.”
11|85|“O my people! Give full measure and full weight, in all fairness, and do not cheat the people out of their rights, and do not spread corruption in the land.
11|86|What is left by God is best for you, if you are believers. And I am not a guardian over you.”
H 1075, Ch. 107, h 2
Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad who has said
that Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Daynuri narrated to me from ‘Umar ibn Zahir from abu
‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant:
“He (the narrator) has said that a man asked, ‘Is al-Qa’im (the
one who will rise with Divine Authority and power) offered the
greeting of peace as the commander of the believers?’ The Imam
said, ‘No, because that is the title that Allah had given to Ali ibn
abu Talib, recipient of divine supreme covenant. Allah had not
given this title to anyone before him. No one will be called by
this title except an unbeliever.’
“I then said, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your
cause, what form of greeting of peace will be offered to him?’
The Imam said, ‘They will say, “Peace be upon you, O Baqiyyat
Allah (Allah’s reserved power to establish His authority on
earth).”’ He then recited from the Holy Quran: ‘If you are true
believers then know that the profit which Allah has left for you
is better for you (than what you may gain through deceitful
ways). I am not responsible for your deeds.’” (11:86)
11|87|They said, “O Shuaib, does your prayer command you that we abandon what our ancestors worshiped, or doing with our wealth what we want? You are the one who is intelligent and wise.”
11|88|He said, “O my people, have you considered? What if I have clear evidence from my Lord, and He has given me good livelihood from Himself? I have no desire to do what I forbid you from doing. I desire nothing but reform, as far as I can. My success lies only with God. In Him I trust, and to Him I turn.”
11|89|“O my people, let not your hostility towards me cause you to suffer what was suffered by the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Saleh. The people of Lot are not far away from you.”
11|90|“And ask your Lord for forgiveness, and repent to Him. My Lord is Merciful and Loving.”
11|91|They said, “O Shuaib, we do not understand much of what you say, and we see that you are weak among us. Were it not for your tribe, we would have stoned you. You are of no value to us.”
11|92|He said, “O my people, is my tribe more important to you than God? And you have turned your backs on Him? My Lord comprehends everything you do.”
11|93|“O my people, do as you may, and so will I. You will know to whom will come a punishment that will shame him, and who is a liar. So look out; I am on the lookout with you.”
11|94|And when Our command came, We saved Shuaib and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and the Blast struck the wrongdoers, and they became motionless bodies in their homes.
11|95|As though they never flourished therein. Away with Median, as was done away with Thamood.
11|96|And We sent Moses with Our signs and a clear mandate.
11|97|To Pharaoh and his nobles, but they followed the command of Pharaoh, and the command of Pharaoh was not wise.
11|98|He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection, and will lead them into the Fire. Miserable is the place he placed them in.
11|99|They were followed by a curse in this, and on the Day of Resurrection. Miserable is the path they followed.
11|100|These are of the reports of the towns—We relate them to you. Some are still standing, and some have withered away.
11|101|We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. Their gods, whom they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when the command of your Lord arrived. In fact, they added only to their ruin.
11|102|Such is the grip of your Lord when He seizes the towns in the midst of their sins. His grip is most painful, most severe.
11|103|In that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which humanity will be gathered together—that is a Day to be witnessed.
11|104|We only postpone it until a predetermined time.
11|105|On the Day when it arrives, no soul will speak without His permission. Some will be miserable, and some will be happy.
11|106|As for those who are miserable, they will be in the Fire. They will have therein sighing and wailing.
11|107|Remaining therein for as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Your Lord is Doer of whatever He wills.
11|108|And as for those who are happy, they will be in Paradise, remaining therein for as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills—a reward without end.
11|109|So be not in doubt regarding what these people worship. They worship only as their ancestors worshiped before. We will pay them their due in full, without any reduction.
11|110|We gave Moses the Scripture, but it was disputed. Were it not for a prior word from your Lord, it would have been settled between them. They are in serious doubt concerning it.
H 14880 – And by the above chain (of narrators), who has narrated the following:
Abu Ja’farasws regarding the Statement of the Mighty and Majestic: “[38:86] Say:
“No reward do I ask of you for this nor am I a pretender [38:87] It is nothing but
a reminder to the nations”. Heasws said: ‘It (the Reminder) is Amir-ul-
Momineenasws’. “[38:88] And most certainly you will come to know about it after
a time”. Heasws said: ‘During the coming out of Al-Qaimasws’. And with regards to the
Statement of the Mighty and Majestic “[11:110] We certainly gave the Book to
Moses, but differences arose therein”. Heasws said: ‘They differed just like this
community has differed regarding the Book, and they will be differing with regards to
the Book with Al-Qaimasws which heasws will be coming to them with, to the extent that
numerous people would deny it. So heasws will march against them and strike their
necks.
11|111|Your Lord will repay each one of them in full for their deeds. He is Aware of everything they do.
11|112|So be upright, as you are commanded, along with those who repented with you, and do not transgress. He is Seeing of everything you do.
11|113|And do not incline towards those who do wrong, or the Fire may touch you; and you will have no protectors besides God, and you will not be saved.
H 8473, Ch. 29, h 12
A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad in a marfu’ manner the following:
“About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘You must not take sides with the unjust
ones; consequently the fire will touch you,’ (11:113) he (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘This is
a man who works with the sultan and loves his remaining in power so that he can have a hand in his
achievements and receive grants from him.’”
11|114|Perform the prayer at the borders of the day, and during the approaches of the night. The good deeds take away the bad deeds. This is a reminder for those who remember.
H 4790, Ch. 3, h 1
Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn
Muhammad ibn ‘Isa and Muhammad ibn `Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has
said the following:
“I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about how much of Salat (prayer) Allah, most Majestic,
most Glorious, has made obligatory. He (the Imam) said, ‘During one day and night five Salat (prayer)
are made obligatory.’ I then asked, ‘Has He named and explained them in His book?’ He (the Imam)
said, ‘Yes, Allah, most High has said to His Holy Prophet, “Perform Salat (prayer) after the sun
declines to the west, on midday until the darkness of the night.” (17:78).The sun declines on midday.
There are four Salat (prayer) between midday and the darkness of the night. Allah has named,
explained and timed them. Darkness of night is in midnight. He, most Blessed, most High has then
said, “. . . and the recitation (performing Salat (prayer)) at dawn and recitation at dawn was witnessed
(attended by the angels of the day and those of the nights).” These are five Salat (prayers). Allah, most
High about this issue has said, “Perform Salat (prayer) on both ends of the day, [which is sunset and
morning], and in a part of the night.” (11:116) This is al-‘Isha’ Salat (prayer) He, most High has said,
“Preserve Salat (prayer) especially the middle Salat (prayer).” (2:239) Middle Salat (prayer) is al-
Zuhr Salat (prayer) which is the first Salat (prayer) the Messenger of Allah performed. It is in the
middle of two Salat (prayer) during the day, the morning and al-‘Asr Salat (prayer). In some of the
recitations it is said, “Preserve Salawat (prayers) and the middle Salat (prayer).” Middle Salat (prayer)
is al-‘Asr Salat (prayer).’ About the words of Allah, “Stand up praying before Allah,” he (the Imam)
said, ‘This verse was revealed on Friday when the Messenger of Allah was on a journey. The
Messenger of Allah prayed before Allah on Friday and left it in that condition during a journey or
when at home. For those at home he added two Rak‘ats. He reduced two Rak‘at which the Holy
Prophet, had added on Friday for people when at home, because of the two sermons which a prayer
leader delivers. Those who perform Friday prayer without congregation, they perform it four Rak‘at
like al-Zuhr Salat (prayer) in other days.’”

Muhammad ibn Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Ibrahim ibn ‘Umar al-Yamaniy from
those who narrated to him the following:
“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious,
‘Good deeds eliminate bad deeds’ (11:116) has said, ‘It is a reference to the Salat (prayer) of a
believing person during the night that eliminate his bad deeds he has done during the day.’”
H 2945, CH 184, h 4
Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from
Ali ibn al-Hakam from Fadl ibn ‘Uthman al-Muradi who has said the following:
“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant,
saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘If four things are
found in a person Allah will not allow his destruction to take
place unless he is one of those doomed to destruction: (1) a
servant (of Allah) intends to perform a good deed and actually
does it, (2) even if he does not do it Allah still writes for him one
good deed because of his good intention, but if he actually does
perform it Allah will write ten good deeds for him. (3) One may
intend to commit an evil deed and if he does not do it nothing
will be written against him, however, (4) if he does commit such
act he will be given seven hours. The angel for the good deeds
will say to the one for the evil deeds who is on the left side, ‘Do
not hurry, perhaps he may perform a good deed that will cancel
the evil deed as Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, says,
‘The good deeds remove the bad deeds,’ (11:114) if he may say,
‘I ask forgiveness from Allah, besides whom no one deserves to
be worshipped. He knows the unseen and the manifest, He is the
most majestic, the most wise, the forgiving, the merciful,
glorious and honorable and I turn in repentance to Him,’ nothing
will be written against him. If seven hours pass, and he performs
no good deed or repentance the angel for the good deeds will say
to the one for the evil deeds, ‘Write it down against the wicked
and deprived one that he is.’”
11|115|And be patient. God will not waste the reward of the virtuous.
11|116|If only there were, among the generations before you, people with wisdom, who spoke against corruption on earth—except for the few whom We saved. But the wrongdoers pursued the luxuries they were indulged in, and thus became guilty.
11|117|Your Lord would never destroy the towns wrongfully, while their inhabitants are righteous.
11|118|Had your Lord willed, He could have made humanity one community, but they continue to differ.
H 1160, Ch. 108, h 83
A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu
Nasr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman from abu ‘Ubayda al-Hadhdha’ who has said
the following:
“Once I asked abu Ja‘far, recipient of divine supreme
covenant, about the capability and the words of people. The
Imam recited this verse of the Holy Quran: ‘. . . they still have
different beliefs (11:118) except those upon whom Allah has
granted His mercy. For this reason He has created them. . . .’
(11:119) ‘O abu ‘Ubayda, people face differences in search for
truth and all of them will be destroyed,’ said the Imam.
‘I (the narrator) then asked, “What about the words of Allah: ‘.
. . except those who receive mercy from your Lord. . . .?’”
(11:119)
‘The Imam said, “Such people are our followers whom He has
created for His mercy. ‘. . . For this reason He has created them.
. . .’” (11:119)
Note: in the following passage, as the previous ones, what is inside brackets is
the words of the Imam and the rest are the words of the Holy Quran.
‘[He (Allah) has said that they are created to obey the Imam of
‘Blessings’ that He has mentioned in His words]: “. . . My mercy
and blessings have encompassed all things. . . .” (7:156) [Such
‘Blessing’ is the knowledge of Imam. The knowledge of
‘A’immah (Leaders with Divine Authority) is from His
knowledge, which has encompassed all things. They (all things)
stand for our Shi‘a, followers].
‘[Then He has said], “. . . I shall grant mercy to those who
maintain piety [do not acknowledge the authority of and
obedience to those who are not of ‘A’immah] . . .” (7:156)
‘[Then Allah has said], “. . . whose description they find
written in the Torah and the Gospel, . . . [the Holy Prophet, the
executor of his will and al-Qa’im (the one who will rise with
Divine Authority)] . . . enjoins them to do good [when he will
rise with Divine Authority and power] . . . and forbids them to
do all that is unlawful . . . [Munkar, unlawful, is one who does
not acknowledge the Wilayah of Imam and denies it] . . . He
makes lawful for them all that is pure . . . [he receives
knowledge from its proper source] . . . and unlawful all that is
filthy. . . . [The words of those who oppose the Imam are filthy] .
. . He removes their burdens . . . [the sins that they had before
acknowledging Wilayah of the Imam] . . . and the entanglements
in which they are involved . . . [the entanglements are the words
that they were not commanded to express. Such words were not
in praise and virtue of the Imam, recipient of divine supreme
covenant. When they recognized the excellence of the Imam, He
removed their burden. Such burden is the sin. Then He further
has explained about them], ‘. . . those who believe in him [the
Imam] . . . honor and help him, and follow the light which is sent
down to him, will have everlasting happiness.’” (7:157) [Such
people are those who kept away from the worship of the Devil
and Satan. So and so and so ones are Devil and Satan. ‘Worship’
means people’s obeying them. Allah then has said], ‘Turn to
your Lord in repentance and submit to Him. . . .,’ (39:54) [then
He has granted them rewards], ‘. . . will receive glad news both
in this life and in the life hereafter. . . .’ (10:64) [Imam gives
them the glad news of the rise of al-Mahdi with Divine
Authority, the news of the destruction of their enemies and
salvation in the hereafter and their meeting Imam Ali and
Prophet Muhammad, recipients of divine supreme covenant, and
their truthful family at the pond of al-Kawthar in paradise].’”
