Tafsir 3. Ale Imran

Aal-i-Imraan

1الم

3|1|Alif, Lam, Meem.
3|2|God, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal.
3|3|He sent down to you the Book with the Truth, confirming what came before it; and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel.
3|4|Aforetime, as guidance for mankind; and He sent down the Criterion. Those who have rejected God’s signs will have a severe punishment. God is Mighty, Able to take revenge.
3|5|Nothing is hidden from God, on earth or in the heaven.
3|6|It is He who forms you in the wombs as He wills. There is no god except He, the Almighty, the Wise.
3|7|It is He who revealed to you the Book. Some of its verses are definitive; they are the foundation of the Book, and others are unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow the unspecific part, seeking descent, and seeking to derive an interpretation. But none knows its interpretation except God and those firmly rooted in knowledge say, “We believe in it; all is from our Lord.” But none recollects except those with understanding.

The Quran is a book with words which are meant to be understood, those parts that are clear are to be taken as they are, those parts that are not clear from the presented words can only be understood via authentic sources and not from guesswork. H 555, Ch. 22, h 2
Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from ‘Abdallah ibn Ali from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq from ‘Adallah ibn Hammad from Burayd ibn Mu‘awiya who has narrated the following from either one of the Imams (a.s.) about the words of Allah, Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most gracious. “No one knows its true interpretations except God and those who have a firm grounding in knowledge . . .” (3:7). The Holy Prophet is the best among the people well- grounded in knowledge. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most gracious, taught him all that He had revealed to him in the form of original text and in the form of interpretations. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most gracious, would not reveal anything to him that he would not know the meaning thereof. The successors of the Holy Prophet (s.a.) after him knew all revelations. As for those who do not know the interpretations thereof, when the scholar speaks to them with knowledge, they say, “We believe in it, for all of this is from our Lord.” The Holy Quran consists of specific, general, clear, not so clear, abrogating and abrogated statements. The people who are well-grounded in knowledge know all of the Holy Quran.”

3|8|“Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to swerve after You have guided us, and bestow on us mercy from Your presence; You are the Giver.”
3|9|“Our Lord, You will gather the people for a Day in which there is no doubt.” God will never break His promise.
3|10|As for those who disbelieve, neither their wealth nor their children will avail them anything against God. These will be fuel for the Fire.

As mentioned in 2:48, intercession is not accepted from those who disbelieve.

3|11|Like the behavior of Pharaoh’s people and those before them. They rejected Our signs, so God seized them for their sins. God is Strict in retribution.
3|12|Say to those who disbelieve, “You will be defeated, and rounded up into Hell—an awful resting-place.”
3|13|There was a sign for you in the two parties that met. One party fighting in the way of God, and the other was disbelieving. They saw them with their own eyes twice their number. But God supports with His help whomever He wills. In that is a lesson for those with insight.
3|14|Adorned for the people is the love of desires, such as women, and children, and piles upon piles of gold and silver, and branded horses, and livestock, and fields. These are the conveniences of the worldly life, but with God lies the finest resort.
3|15|Say, “Shall I inform you of something better than that? For those who are righteous, with their Lord are Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever, and purified spouses, and acceptance from God.” God is Observant of the servants.
3|16|Those who say, “Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us our sins, and save us from the suffering of the Fire.”
3|17|The patient, and the truthful, and the reverent, and the charitable, and the seekers of forgiveness at dawn.
3|18|God bears witness that there is no god but He, as do the angels, and those endowed with knowledge—upholding justice. There is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.
3|19|Religion with God is Islam. Those to whom the Scripture was given differed only after knowledge came to them, out of envy among themselves. Whoever rejects the signs of God—God is quick to take account.

by Islam do we understand a noun? Eg the name of a particular group? Or do we mean the verb, eg the one who submits to God. I suggest the verb, and this makes more sense as it explains how previous Prophets and even religions are not Muslim but are Islam.

3|20|If they argue with you, say, “I have surrendered myself to God, and those who follow me.” And say to those who were given the Scripture, and to the unlearned, “Have you surrendered?” If they have surrendered, then they are guided; but if they turn away, then your duty is to convey. God is Seeing of the servants.
3|21|As for those who defy God’s revelations, and kill the prophets unjustly, and kill those who advocate justice among the people—promise them a painful retribution.
3|22|They are those whose deeds will come to nothing, in this world and in the Hereafter; and they will have no saviors.
3|23|Have you not considered those who were given a share of the Scripture, as they were called to the Scripture of God to arbitrate between them; then some of them turned back, and declined?
3|24|That is because they said, “The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days.” They have been misled in their religion by the lies they fabricated.
3|25|How about when We gather them for a Day in which there is no doubt, and each soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged?
3|26|Say, “O God, Owner of Sovereignty. You grant sovereignty to whom You will, and You strip sovereignty from whom you will. You honor whom you will, and You humiliate whom you will. In Your hand is all goodness. You are Capable of all things.”
3|27|“You merge the night into the day, and You merge the day into the night; and you bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living; and You provide for whom you will without measure.”
3|28|Believers are not to take disbelievers as an Authority/Ruler instead of believers. Whoever does that has nothing to do with God, unless it is to protect your own selves against them. God warns you to beware of Him. To God is the destiny.

by nafs He means His revenge. This verse refers to the concept of Taqiyya.

3|29|Say, “Whether you conceal what is in your hearts, or disclose it, God knows it.” He knows everything in the heavens and the earth. God is Powerful over everything.
3|30|On the Day when every soul finds all the good it has done presented. And as for the evil it has done, it will wish there were a great distance between them. God cautions you of Himself. God is Kind towards the servants.
3|31|Say, “If you love God, then follow me, and God will love you, and will forgive you your sins.” God is Forgiving and Merciful.
3|32|Say, “Obey God and the Messenger.” But if they turn away—God does not love the faithless.

obey God and the messenger, suggests that there is a role for hadith in the religion. Those that say they only follow Quran, would have to therefore follow this and similar verses and therefore take on board the sunnah, however it has reached them.

3|33|God chose Adam, and Noah, and the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran, over all mankind.
3|34|Offspring one of the other. God is Hearer and Knower.

The role of authority and Prophethood is genetic, it is not for anyone.

3|35|The wife of Imran said, “My Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb, dedicated, so accept from me; You are the Hearer and Knower.”
3|36|And when she delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a female,” and God was well aware of what she has delivered, “and the male is not like the female, and I have named her Mary, and have commended her and her descendants to Your protection, from Satan the outcast.”
3|37|Her Lord accepted her with a gracious reception, and brought her a beautiful upbringing, and entrusted her to the care of Zechariah. Whenever Zechariah entered upon her in the sanctuary, he found her with provision. He said, “O Mary, where did you get this from?” She said, “It is from God; God provides to whom He wills without reckoning.”
3|38|Thereupon Zechariah prayed to his Lord; he said, “My Lord, bestow on me good offspring from Your presence; You are the Hearer of Prayers.”
3|39|Then the angels called out to him, as he stood praying in the sanctuary: “God gives you good news of John; confirming a Word from God, and honorable, and moral, and a prophet; one of the upright.”
3|40|He said, “My Lord, how will I have a son, when old age has overtaken me, and my wife is barren?” He said, “Even so, God does whatever He wills.”
3|41|He said, “My Lord, give me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that you shall not speak to the people for three days, except by gestures. And remember your Lord much, and praise in the evening and the morning.”
3|42|The angels said, “O Mary, God has chosen you, and has purified you. He has chosen you over all the women of the world.

Holy Prophet (s) as well as the 6th Imam (Imam Jafar al-Sadiq peace be upon him) have said:

In the case of Maryam, she was the superior lady at her time (only); while Fatima (s.a.) is the superior lady at all times, from the very beginning up to the end.

Biharul-Anwar, Vol. 90, P.24

3|43|“O Mary, be devoted to your Lord, and bow down, and kneel with those who kneel.”
3|44|These are accounts from the Unseen, which We reveal to you. You were not with them when they cast their lots as to which of them would take charge of Mary; nor were you with them as they quarreled.
3|45|The Angels said, “O Mary, God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, well-esteemed in this world and the next, and one of the nearest.

Myriam AS who was not a Prophet yet received wahi – divine knowledge. This shows it is not only Prophets who can receive divine knowledge.

3|46|He will speak to the people from the crib, and in adulthood, and will be one of the righteous.”
3|47|She said, “My Lord, how can I have a child, when no man has touched me?” He said, “It will be so. God creates whatever He wills. To have anything done, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”

Kun fa yakoon  – be and it is established, in the framework of Allah, there is nothing that cant be done, logic stops at Him.

I make for you out of clay the figure of a bird; then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind and the leprous, and I revive the dead, by God’s leave. And I inform you concerning what you eat, and what you store in your homes. In that is a sign for you, if you are believers.”

Tafsir al-`Ayyashi: From al-Hadhali from a man.  He said: `Isa عليه السلام remained until he reached seven years (of age) or eight years, then he set about informing them of what they ate and what they stored up in their houses.  So he rose (dwelt?) in the midst of them, reviving the dead and healing the blind and the leper, and teaching them the Torah.  And Allah sent down upon them the Injil for what Allah wanted there to be upon them of proof. From Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from the one who he mentioned going up to him.  He said: The companions of `Isa عليه السلام asked him to revive a deceased person for them.  He said: So he brought them to the grave of Sam b. Nuh (i.e. Shem son of Noah).  So he said to him: Rise, by the permission of Allah, O Sam son of Nuh.  He said: So the grave was cracked, then the speech was repeated and it moved, then the speech was repeated and Sam b. Nuh came out.  So `Isa said to him: Which is more beloved to you, that you remain or that you return?  So he said: O Spirit of Allah, rather that I return.  Verily I find the burning of death – or he said: the conflagration of death – inside of me until now. From Aban b. Taghlab.  He said: Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام was asked: Did `Isa b. Maryam revive anyone after his death until (or: in order that) there was eating, provision, a duration, and a child for him?So he said: Yes, he had a friend who was as a brother to him in Allah, and `Isa would pass by him and lodge with him.  `Isa had been absent from him for a time, then he passed by him to greet him, but his mother came out to him to greet him.  So he asked her about him, and his mother said: He died, O Messenger of Allah.  So he said to her: Would you like to see him?  She said: Yes.  He said to her: When it is tomorrow, I will come to you that I might revive him for you by the permission of Allah تعالى.  So when it was the next day, he came to her, and he said to her:Set out with me to his grave.  So they set out until they came to his grave.  So `Isa عليه السلام stopped, then prayed to Allah and the grave opened, and her son came out alive.  So when his mother saw him and he saw her, they cried and `Isa عليه السلام had mercy on them. So he said to him: Would you like to remain with your mother in the world?  He said: O Messenger of Allah, with eating, provision and a duration, or without a duration and not provision and no eating?  So `Isa said to him: Rather, with provision and eating and a duration.  You will live twenty years, and marry and a child be born for you.  He said: So yes then.  So `Isa turned him over to his mother, and he lived twenty years and a child was born for him. Tafsir al-Qummi: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hamdani narrated to us.  He said: Ja`far b. `Abdullah narrated to me.  He said: Kathir b. `Ayyash narrated to us from Ziyad b. al-Mundhir from Abu ‘l-Jarud (trans. note: this must be an error since Ziyad b. al-Mundhir is Abu ‘l-Jarud) from Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali عليهما السلامregarding His saying “and I will tell you what you eat and what you store up in your houses”.  `Isa عليه السلام used to say to the Children of Israel that I am the messenger of Allah to you and I will create for you out of clay as though it were the form of a bird, and I will blow thereof and it shall a bird by the permission of Allah.  And I will heal the blind and the leper – and the akmah is the blind. They said: We do not regard what you do to be but sorcery.  So show us a sign that we might know you are truthful.  He said: Would you regard that if I told you what you eat and you store up – he is saying what you ate in your houses prior to you storing it up at night – that you would know that I am truthful?  They said: Yes.  So he would say to the man: You ate such and such and drank such and such and you raised up (i.e. stored) such and such.  So from them there would be he who would accept from him and believe, and from them there he would be who would deny and disbelieve.  And in that there was sign for them if they were believers.

Shiekh Al Saduq says : Our opponents (the Sunnites) have related that
when the Mahdi, on whom be peace, will appear, Jesus,
son of Mary, on whom be peace will descend upon the
earth and pray behind the Mahdi. Now the descend of
Jesus to the earth is his return to the world after death,
because Allah the Glorious and Mighty says: “Verily I
will cause thee to die, and will take thee up to Myself”
[3, 55].

Implying that Nabi Isa AS has died.

“at-Tawaffi” is to take something completely. It is for this reason that it is also used for death, because at the time of death Allah takes man’s soul away from his body. See, for example, the following verses:

Our messengers take him completely (6:61), i.e., cause him to die.

And they say:  “What! when we have become lost in the earth, shall we then indeed be in a new creation?”… Say: “The angel of death who is given charge of you shall take you completely (i.e., cause you to die), then to your Lord you shall be brought back” (32:10-11).

Allah takes completely the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep: then He withholds those on whom He has passed the decree of death and sends the others back till an appointed term… (39:42).

Pondering on the last two verses you will see that the Qur’an has not used at-tawaffi in the meaning of death, rather the word gives the idea of taking and preserving. In other words, when at-tawaffi is used for death, it is not because it means death; rather it is used to emphasize the connotation of taking and preserving, to show and establish that man’s soul does not perish, is not destroyed by death – contrary to what ignorant people think; Allah keeps and preserves it until comes the time to return it to its body for resurrection. At other places where this sense is not involved, Allah uses the word al-mawt(death), and not at-tawaffi’. For example:-

And Muhammad is no more than a messenger, the messengers have already passed away before him: if then he dies or is killed, will you turn back upon your heels? (3:144)

...it shall not be finished with them entirely so that they should die… (35:36).

There are a lot of other verses of this type, not excepting some verses in ‘Isa’s story itself: For example, there are, ‘Isa’s words about himself: And peace be on me on the day I was born, and on the day I die, and on the day I am raised to life (19:33); and Allah’s words about him: And there is not one of the people of the Book but most certainly shall believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he (‘Isa) shall be a witness against them (4:159). It all shows that at-tawaffi does not necessarily mean death.

This interpretation is also supported by the words of Allah refuting the claim of the Jews: And their saying: “Surely we killed the Messiah, ‘Isa son of Mar yam, the messenger of Allah;” and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so(like ‘Isa); and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture; and they killed him not for sure. Rather, Allah took him up to Himself; and Allah is Mighty, Wise. And there is not one of the people of the Book but most certainly shall believe in him before his death and on the Day of Resurrection he (‘Isa) shall be a witness against them (4:157-159). The Jews claimed that they had killed the Messiah, ‘Isa son of Maryam, and likewise the Christians think that the Jews had killed ‘Isa son of Maryam by crucifixion, and that after he was crucified Allah raised him up from his grave to the heaven, as the Gospels say. But the Qur’anic verses, as you see, unequivocally refute the story of killing and crucifixion both.

It is apparent from the Divine Words, And there is not one of the people of the Book…, that ‘Isa (a.s.) is alive near Allah and that he will not die until all the people of the Book shall believe in him. Keeping all these factors in view, the word at-tawaffi, used in the verse under discussion, would only mean that Allah was to take him away completely from among the Jews. Yet the verse does not say so clearly; it is only its apparent connotation. (We shall write in detail on this subject at the end of the fourth Chapter, ‘The Women’.)

QUR’AN: “and cause you to ascend unto Me and purify you of those who disbelieve:

“ar-Raf” (to raise, to cause to ascend) is opposite of al-wad’ (to put down). at-taharah (cleanliness, purity) is opposite of al-qadharah (dirtiness, impurity). We have already explained the meaning of cleanliness. The phrase, “cause you to ascend”, is qualified by the word, “unto Me”; and it implies that the ascension was spiritual, rather than physical; because Allah has no place like the physical spaces in which a body or things related to body arrive, stay or settle down, and from which they depart or to which they come nearer. Accordingly, this phrase will have the same connotation as the words at the end of this very verse have: then to Me shall be your return. This interpretation will be strengthened if at-tawaffi is taken to mean “to cause to die”; because in that case, “to cause to ascend to Me” would imply raising his rank and taking him nearer to Allah. Its meaning will, then, be similar to the verse 3:169, wherein Allah says about those who are martyred in His way: they are alive near their Lord; and the verse 19:57, where He says about Idris (a.s.): And We raised him to a high station.

Another interpretation: The ascension refers to his being raised alive with his body and soul together to the heaven; because the apparent meaning of the Qur’anic verses suggest that the heaven – i.e. the physical one – is the place of nearness to Allah, the venue from which the Divine favors and blessings are sent down, and where the honored angels live. Probably, we shall discuss the meaning of as-sama”(sky, heaven) somewhere else, Allah willing.

Purification from the unbelievers, as it is preceded by ascension to Allah, implies spiritual, rather than physical purification. Accordingly, it means that Allah would keep him away from the unbelievers, protect him from mingling with them, and remove him from their society – the society that is polluted by their unbelief and rejection of truth.

QUR’AN: “and make those who follow you above those who disbelieve to the Day of Resurrection:

In this verse Allah gives a promise that He will surely make the followers of ‘Isa (a.s.) prevail over his adversaries who disbelieved in his prophethood, and that this predominance will continue up to the Day of Resurrection. This verse distinguishes the superior group from the inferior one, saying that the superior ones are those who follow ‘Isa (a.s.) and the opposite group is that of the unbelievers – without mentioning that they were from the Children of Israel, or that they were the Jews who professed to follow the shari’ah of Musa (a.s.) or pointing to them in any other way.

Of course, looking at the fact that his adversaries have been defined as unbelievers, it appears that “those who follow you” refers to the following in the way of truth, a following that is approved by Allah and which He is pleased with. Accordingly, his followers would be those Christians who did not deviate from his straight path before Islam came to abrogate ‘Isa’s religion: and after the advent of Islam it is the Muslims who are his followers – because only these two groups are his followers in the path of truth. If so, then the promised superiority would mean their superiority in their arguments and proofs, not their material domination or their rule over his adversaries. The meaning thus will be as follows: The proof of your followers, i.e., the above mentioned Christians and the Muslims, shall be victorious over the proof of those who disbelieve in you, i.e., the Jews, up to the Day of Resurrection.

The above was the explanation given and chosen by the exegetes. But I think that the verse does not support this interpretation either explicitly or implicitly. Evidently the whole sentence, “I am going to take you away completely and cause you to ascend unto Me and purify you of those who disbelieve, and make those who follow you above those who disbelieve to the Day of Resurrection,” is news of what was to happen in the future: His being taken away, his ascension to Allah, his purification from disbelievers and the domination of his followers over unbelievers all was to happen sometimes after Allah had given him this news. Moreover, the words, “and make those who follow you above those who disbelieve,” contain a promise and a good tiding, and good tiding always refer to some future event. And it is known that the proof of the ‘Isa’s followers is nothing but the proof of ‘Isa himself. These are the very proofs which were mentioned in the good news given to Maryam. And those proofs had certainly gained ascendancy over those of the unbelievers, both when ‘Isa (a.s.) was present before his ascension, as well as after his ascension. It may rather be said that before his ascension those proofs were more decisive and more convincing in face of his adversaries claims than they were after his ascension. This being the case, what is the meaning of a promise that his followers proofs would overcome those of his adversaries – in future? Again, why should this dominance be limited “to the Day of Resurrection” only? If a proof is victorious and convincing it should remain so for all times, without any limitation of time or day. Moreover, victory of a true proof over false ones will be even more manifest on the Day of Resurrection, as the Qur’an informs us in connection of that Day’s happenings.

A suggestion: Perhaps predominance of proof means that it would be more popular, more widely accepted – people would heed more to it, would accept it more readily; in this way their number would increase, and their power be more formidable.

COMMENT: Does it mean that his true followers would prevail over the disbelievers, would rule over them and overwhelm them with their power? But the fact is otherwise. It is no use saying that it may be a good news which would come true in distant future in the last days of the world, because the wordings of the verse do not allow such delay Or does it mean predominance in number that is, his followers – the followers of truth after ‘Isa (a.s.) would be more numerous than the followers of falsehood? But reality belies it. The followers of falsity have always been in majority, and the people of truth always in minority, right from the time of ‘Isa (a.s.) upto these days of ours – a long period of two millennia. Moreover, the wordings of the verse do not support this interpretation either. Look at the context; the verse gives ‘Isa (a.s.) the good news that Allah’s displeasure was to descend on the Jews, that they were to be overwhelmed by Divine Anger.

In this background, the predominance of his followers conforms more with his followers’ hold and dominance over his adversaries – either through convincing proofs or through rule and domination. But in no way does it point to the majority in number.

Let us have a fresh look at this verse: It distinguishes the two groups with two verbs: “those who follow you”, and “those who disbelieve”. The verb shows that an action has taken or will take place within the framework of a time – past, present or future. The implication would differ if these phrases were changed to adjectives: “followers” and “disbelievers”; because adjectives show a more or less permanent attribute which transcends time limits, the said attribute is found in its related thing or person at all times. Suppose there is a group of people who do something good or bad, and the rest of the nation is pleased with it, even the coming generations agree with what their ancestors did, then this much ideological identity and psychological identification are enough to ascribe that action or thing to the whole nation. For example, the Qur’an admonishes the Jews and condemns them because of their ancestors’ actions like hurting and slaying the prophets, their arrogance in face of the commands of Allah and His messengers, their alterations and interpolations in the Book of Allah and many other things like that.

In view of the above-mentioned two principles, “those who disbelieve” may be interpreted as the whole Jewish nation; and “those who follow you” may mean all the Christians because their early fathers had believed in and followed ‘isa (a.s.) – and it was a correct belief and true following – although Allah was not pleased with those among them who believed in the trinity before Islam, nor was He pleased with the whole nation when they continued to follow ‘Isa (a.s.) even after the advent of Islam.

The sentence therefore means that Allah was to make the Christians – whose ancestors had truly followed ‘Isa (a.s.) – dominant over the Jews because they had disbelieved in ‘Isa (a.s.) and had planned and conspired against him.

The aim is to show that Allah’s wrath has descended on the Jews, and His severe chastisement has engulfed their nation. (We have explained above that the early Christians had truly followed ‘Isa [a.s.]; and therefore the whole Christian nation may be included in the phrase, “those who follow you”.)

Going further, we find the phraseology changed. Instead of saying “those who follow you”, Allah says: “And as to those who believe and do good deeds …” This too supports our  interpretations that “those who follow you” covers all the Christians, irrespective of their present belief and behavior. It does not mean only the Muslims and those Christians who had correct belief and had truly followed ‘Isa (a.s.) – in short it is not confined to those who will be saved in the hereafter. Otherwise, Allah would have continued the earlier mode of expression and said: And as to those who follow you, He will pay them fully their rewards.

Another interpretation: “those who follow you” covers all the Christians and all the Muslims; and the verse foretells that up to the Day of Resurrection the Jews would always remain under the domination of those who believe that it is obligatory to follow ‘Isa (a.s.) – and the basis of the explanation is the same as above. And it is the best of the interpretations written for this verse.

Sometimes Christians use the miraculous nature of Prophet Isa AS birth as an argument for him being the “Son of God”, by stating that Jesus had a mother, but no father, and God was the other partner in the birth. The Quran replies by stating this is not a valid argument, as Adam AS also did not have a father, or in fact a mother, however Christians do not see Adam AS as the son of God. Its important also to define the word “son”, as we are all the effect of God’s work, but “son” implies a genetic connection to the father, which is simply not the case in this instance.

3|67|Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a Monotheist, a Muslim. And he was not of the Polytheists.
3|68|The people most deserving of Abraham are those who followed him, and this prophet, and those who believe. God is the Guardian of the believers.

H , Ch. 108, h 20
Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Muthanna from ‘Abdallah ibn ‘Ajlan from abu Ja‘far (a.s.) the following. about the words of Allah, the Most High. “The nearest people to Abraham, among mankind, are those who followed him, this Prophet (Muhammad) and the believers. . . .” (3:68) The Imam (a. s.) said, “They are the Imams and those who follow them.

3|69|A party of the People of the Book would love to lead you astray, but they only lead themselves astray, and they do not realize it.
3|70|O People of the Book! Why do you reject the revelations of God, even as you witness?
3|71|O People of the Book! Why do you confound the truth with falsehood, and knowingly conceal the truth?
3|72|Some of the People of the Book say, “Believe in what was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day, and reject it at its end, so that they may return.”

Refers to the conspiracies of some non-Muslims at the time of the Prophet SAW, who would try to join Islam, only to undermine it and criticise it and eventually leave saying awful it is etc This is perhaps reference to or context for some of the apostasy laws.

3|73|And trust none except those who follow your religion.” Say, “Guidance is God’s guidance. If someone is given the like of what you were given, or they argue with you before your Lord, say, “All grace is in God’s hand; He gives it to whomever He wills.” God is Bounteous and Knowing.
3|74|He specifies His mercy for whomever He wills. God is Possessor of Sublime Grace.
3|75|Among the People of the Book is he, who, if you entrust him with a heap of gold, he will give it back to you. And among them is he, who, if you entrust him with a single coin, he will not give it back to you, unless you keep after him. That is because they say, “We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.” They tell lies about God, and they know it.

The first refers to the Christians the second refers to the Jews

3|76|Indeed, whoever fulfills his commitments and maintains piety—God loves the pious.
3|77|Those who exchange the covenant of God, and their vows, for a small price, will have no share in the Hereafter, and God will not speak to them, nor will He look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. They will have a painful punishment.
3|78|And among them are those who twist the Scripture with their tongues, that you may think it from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture. And they say, “It is from God,” when it is not from God. They tell lies and attribute them to God, knowingly.
3|79|No person to whom God has given the Scripture, and wisdom, and prophethood would ever say to the people, “Be my worshipers rather than God’s.” Rather, “Be people of the Lord, according to the Scripture you teach, and the teachings you learn.”

From Sheikh Suduq: Says the Shaykh Abu Ja’far: Our belief concerning those who exceed the bounds of belief (ghaal, pl. ghulat) and those who believe in delegation (al-mufawwida) is that they are deniers (kuffar) of Allah, Glory be to His name. They are more wicked than the Jews, the Christians, the Fire-Worshippers, the Qadarites 269 or the Kharijites (Haruriya), 270 or any of the heretics (ahlu’lbid’a) or those who hold views which lead astray (alahwa ‘u ‘l-mudilla ).

3|80|Nor would he command you to take the angels and the prophets as lords. Would he command you to infidelity after you have submitted?

Again, its not reasonable for a person to become a muslim, accept God as the one and only God, then take a angel or Prophet as a lord or worship them.

3|81|God received the covenant of the prophets, “In as much as I have given you of scripture and wisdom; should a messenger come to you verifying what you have, you shall believe in him, and support him.” He said, “Do you affirm My covenant and take it upon yourselves?” They said, “We affirm it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”
3|82|Whoever turns away after that—these are the deceitful.
3|83|Do they desire other than the religion of God, when to Him has submitted everything in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be returned?

A hadith narrated by Imam Kadhim AS, says that this verse 3.083 Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?-while all creatures in the heavens and on earth have, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (Accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back refers to the time when the Qaem AS will rise against all non Muslim groups, and they will be offered to join Islam and it will be explained, if they decline, they will be killed. It goes on to say this is mentioned in the Quran in verse 2:193 And fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah, but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.

3|84|Say, “We believe in God, and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses, and Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.”

In terms of their message that they taught.

3|85|Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

Seems to make religious pluralism seem unacceptable. This may not mean than only muslims will be successful, rather if one tries to setup a religion with an ideology other than islam, it will be unsuccessful. If someone pursues the values of Islam, but does not know the religion of Islam, I am uncertain of their fate.

From Al Kafi

H 6, Ch. 1, h 6
Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Hassa’n from abu Muhammad al-Razi from Sayf ibn
‘Umayra from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from abu ‘Abdallah (a.s) who has said the following.
“One who has Intelligence he has a religion also and one who has religion he enters Paradise.”

The suggestion is intelligence or Aql will lead to the correct decisions in morality, ethics , philosophy, which ultimately is what religion is.

3|86|How will God guide a people who disbelieved after having believed, and had witnessed that the Messenger is true, and the clear proofs had come to them? God does not guide the unjust people.
3|87|Those—their penalty is that upon them falls the curse of God, and of the angels, and of all mankind.
3|88|Remaining in it eternally, without their punishment being eased from them, and without being reprieved.
3|89|Except those who repent afterwards, and reform; for God is Forgiving and Merciful.
3|90|As for those who disbelieve after having believed, then plunge deeper into disbelief, their repentance will not be accepted; these are the lost.
3|91|As for those who disbelieve and die disbelievers, even the earth full of gold would not be accepted from any of them, were he to offer it for ransom. These will have a painful torment, and will have no saviors.
3|92|You will not attain virtuous conduct until you give of what you cherish. Whatever you give away, God is aware of it.
3|93|All food was permissible to the Children of Israel, except what Israel forbade for itself before the Torah was revealed. Say, “Bring the Torah, and read it, if you are truthful.”

Juz 4

3|94|Whoever forges lies about God after that—these are the unjust.
3|95|Say, “God has spoken the truth, so follow the religion of Abraham the Monotheist; he was not a Pagan.”
3|96|The first house established for mankind is the one at Bekka; blessed, and guidance for all people.

From Mu`āwiyah bin `Ammār said, I said to Abī `Abd Allāh (عليه السلام) ‘I stand to pray in Makkah and a woman is sitting in front of me or she passes by.’  He (عليه السلام) said: ‘There is no problem.  It is called Bakkah because men and women weep (cry) there.’

Now in hindsight after the Imām has already explained it to us what Bakkah means it makes even more sense because the word “bukaa” or “bakaa” بكي in the Arabic language means to “cry” and “weep”.  What is even more amazing is how the Imām (عليه السلام) was not asked directly about the meaning of the word “Bakkah”.  He is being asked if it is ok to have a woman sitting or passing by him when he is praying in Makkah.  The Imām (عليه السلام) has provided a treasure trove of knowledge with this response.

The word “Bakkah” can be found in the Old Testament in Book of Psalms Chapter 84 verse 6 it says:

King James Version:  Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.

In most translations of the Old Testament, the word is usually left untranslated as Baca, but in some translations they have actually translated the word.  Subhan Allāh, they have translated the word “Baca” as “weeping”.  See the translations below.

American Standard Version – Passing through the valley of Weeping they make it a place of springs; Yea, the early rain covereth it with blessings.

New Living Translation – When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs. The autumn rains will clothe it with blessings.

Aramaic Bible in Plain English – They passed by the valley of weeping and they have made it a dwelling place, also blessings will cover The Lawgiver.

English Revised Version – Passing through the valley of Weeping they make it a place of springs; yea, the early rain covereth it with blessings.

World English Bible – Passing through the valley of Weeping, they make it a place of springs. Yes, the autumn rain covers it with blessings.

Young’s Literal Translation – Those passing through a valley of weeping, A fountain do make it, Blessings also cover the director.

Douay-Rheims Bible – In the vale of tears, in the place which be hath set.

The Kaba is a sign of God, and all signs should be respected and acknowledged.

Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī ‘Umair, from Ḥamād, from al-Halbī, from Abī ‘Abd Allāh (عليه‌ السلام). Said: I asked him [a.s] about the words of Allāh the almighty and exalted: ‘whoever enters it shall be safe‘[3:97]. He [a.s] said: “If the `Abd (slave of Allāh) committed a crime besides [outside of] the Haram (sanctuary), and then flees away to the sanctuary, no one should take him from sanctuary. However, he is prevented from the market; and nor allegiance can be given; nor is he to be fed; nor is he to be given water; and nor is he to be conserved with. If that is done to him, and he is about to leave, then he is taken. And if he committed a crime within the sanctuary, punishment is raised upon him in the sanctuary, because he did not leave/forsake the sanctuary’s sacredness”.

So it does not mean who ever goes to the haram that they are invincible or nothing can harm them, if this was the case then the Prophets SAW would have used this abililty. It means that those that enter should be left alone to worship, and any matters must be resolved outside the haram. If a matter takes place within the haram, then it must be resolved there.

3|103|And hold fast to the rope of God, altogether, and do not become divided. And remember God’s blessings upon you; how you were enemies, and He reconciled your hearts, and by His grace you became brethren. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. God thus clarifies His revelations for you, so that you may be guided.
3|104|And let there be among you a community calling to virtue, and advocating righteousness, and deterring from evil. These are the successful.
3|105|And do not be like those who separated and disputed after the clear proofs came to them; for them is a great punishment.
3|106|On the Day when some faces will be whitened, and some faces will be blackened. As for those whose faces are blackened: “Did you disbelieve after your belief?” Then taste the punishment for having disbelieved.
3|107|But as for those whose faces are whitened: they are in God’s mercy, remaining in it forever.
3|108|These are the revelations of God. We recite them to you in truth. God desires no injustice for mankind.
3|109|To God belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth, and to God all events are referred.
3|110|You are the best community that ever emerged for humanity: you advocate what is moral, and forbid what is immoral, and believe in God. Had the People of the Scripture believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are the believers, but most of them are sinners.
3|111|They will do you no harm, beyond insulting you. And if they fight you, they will turn around and flee, then they will not be helped.
3|112|They shall be humiliated wherever they are encountered, except through a rope from God, and a rope from the people; and they incurred wrath from God, and were stricken with misery. That is because they rejected God’s revelations, and killed the prophets unjustly. That is because they rebelled and committed aggression.

As 2:61

H 2798, CH 156, h 7
A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from
‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama’a from abu Basir from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of
divine supreme covenant, who has said the following:
“About the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘.
. . for unjustly murdering the prophets . . .,’ (3:112) the Imam
said, ‘By Allah, they did not murder them with their swords but
they publicized their secrets, spread them against the prophets
who then were murdered.’”

3|113|They are not alike. Among the People of the Scripture is a community that is upright; they recite God’s revelations throughout the night, and they prostrate themselves.
3|114|They believe in God and the Last Day, and advocate righteousness and forbid evil, and are quick to do good deeds. These are among the righteous.
3|115|Whatever good they do, they will not be denied it. God knows the righteous.

Seems to imply there is some form of religious pluralism.

3|116|As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will avail them anything against God. These are the inhabitants of the Fire, abiding therein forever.

Their possessions or children will not be able to compensate for someones bad deeds, eg no intercession can be made from them.

3|117|The parable of what they spend in this worldly life is that of a frosty wind that strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged their souls, and destroys it. God did not wrong them, but they wronged their own selves.
3|118|O you who believe! Do not befriend outsiders who never cease to wish you harm. They love to see you suffer. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is worse. We have made the messages clear for you, if you understand.
3|119|There you are, you love them, but they do not love you, and you believe in the entire scripture. And when they meet you, they say, “We believe;” but when they are alone, they bite their fingers in rage at you. Say, “Die in your rage; God knows what is within the hearts.”
3|120|If something good happens to you, it upsets them; but if something bad befalls you, they rejoice at it. But if you persevere and maintain righteousness, their schemes will not harm you at all. God comprehends what they do.
3|121|Remember when you left your home in the morning, to assign battle-positions for the believers. God is Hearing and Knowing.
3|122|When two groups among you almost faltered, but God was their Protector. So in God let the believers put their trust.
3|123|God had given you victory at Badr, when you were weak. So fear God, that you may be thankful.
3|124|When you said to the believers, “Is it not enough for you that your Lord has reinforced you with three thousand angels, sent down?”
3|125|It is; but if you persevere and remain cautious, and they attack you suddenly, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels, well trained.
3|126|God made it but a message of hope for you, and to reassure your hearts thereby. Victory comes only from God the Almighty, the Wise.
3|127|He thus cuts off a section of those who disbelieved, or subdues them, so they retreat disappointed.
3|128|It is no concern of yours whether He redeems them or punishes them. They are wrongdoers.
3|129|To God belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

From Al Kafi

H 7, Ch. 1, h 7
A number of our people has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from al-Hassan ibn Ali
ibn Yaqtin from Muhammad ibn Sinan ibn abu al-Jarud from abu Ja‘far (a.s) who has said the
following.
“Allah, on the Day of Judgment, will hold everyone accountable according to the degree of the
intelligence that He had given them in their worldly life.”

3|130|O you who believe! Do not feed on usury, compounded over and over, and fear God, so that you may prosper.
3|131|And guard yourselves against the Fire that is prepared for the disbelievers.
3|132|And obey God and the Messenger, that you may obtain mercy.
3|133|And race towards forgiveness from your Lord, and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous.
3|134|Those who give in prosperity and adversity, and those who restrain anger, and those who forgive people. God loves the doers of good.

Charity is not just given when you can spare it and it doesn’t inconvenience you, but it is also given when it means you will have do without. This does not mean you should give everything away and leave yourself destitute however.

3|135|And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember God and ask forgiveness for their sins—and who forgives sins except God? And they do not persist in their wrongdoing while they know.
3|136|Those—their reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. How excellent is the reward of the workers.
3|137|Many societies have passed away before you. So travel the earth and note the fate of the deniers.

Learn from the past, understanding history is not just a pointless hobby, it will help you avoid their mistakes.

3|138|This is a proclamation to humanity, and guidance, and advice for the righteous.
3|139|And do not waver, nor feel remorse. You are the superior ones, if you are believers.
3|140|If a wound afflicts you, a similar wound has afflicted the others. Such days We alternate between the people, that God may know those who believe, and take martyrs from among you. God does not love the evildoers.
3|141|So that God may prove those who believe, and eliminate the disbelievers.
3|142|Or do you expect to enter Paradise, before God has distinguished those among you who strive, and before He has distinguished the steadfast?

The successful are those who do good when times are easy and hard.

3|143|You used to wish for death before you have faced it. Now you have seen it before your own eyes.
3|144|Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him. If he dies or gets killed, will you turn on your heels? He who turns on his heels will not harm God in any way. And God will reward the appreciative.

H 646, Ch. 41, h 4
Through the same chain of narrators it is narrated from abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) who has said the following. “Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) would say, “We revealed the Quran on the Night of Destiny ((97:1) Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, has certainly said the truth has reveal the Holy Quran on the Night of Determination. “Would that you knew what the Night of Destiny is! (97:2)” the Messenger of Allah said, “I do not know.” Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, said, “(Worship) on the Night of Destiny is better than (worship) for a thousand months (that are other than the Night of Determinatio).” (97:3) He asked the Messenger of Allah, “Do you know why it is better than a thousand nights?” the Messenger of Allah said, “No, I do not know.” He said, “It is because on that Night the angels and the Spirit come down by the permission of their Lord for all matters. When Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, would grant permission for a matter it means that He has agreed.” “This Night is all peace until the break of dawn.” (97:5) He says, “O Muhammad, My angels salute you and My spirit with peaceful greetings from beginning of the time they come down until dawn of that night. Then He has said in another part of His book, “Guard yourselves against discord among yourselves so that it will not mislead anyone of you, especially the unjust, and know that God’s retribution is most severe.” (8:25) It is about the Night of Determination. He has also said in His book, “Muhammad is only a Messenger. There lived other Messengers before him. Should (Muhammad) die or be slain, would you then turn back to your pre-Islamic behavior? Whoever does so can cause no harm to God. God will reward those who give thanks.” (3:144) In the verse He has said that when Muhammad will die the opposition to the command of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, will say , “The Night of Determination has gone along with the Messenger of Allah.” This is the first clamity that has befallen them exclusively. With this they returned back to their old ways. Had they not said so, it would have been necessary to believe that Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, has His commands on that Night. Once they would affirm and acknowledge the command (delegation of Divine authority) it would have become necessary to believe in the existence of the man who possesses Divine authority.”

3|145|No soul can die except by God’s leave, at a predetermined time. Whoever desires the reward of the world, We will give him some of it; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We will give him some of it; and We will reward the appreciative.

Suggests death is something that is predestined.

3|146|How many a prophet fought alongside him numerous godly people? They did not waver for what afflicted them in the cause of God, nor did they weaken, nor did they give in. God loves those who endure.
3|147|Their only words were, “Our Lord, forgive us our offences, and our excesses in our conduct, and strengthen our foothold, and help us against the disbelieving people.”
3|148|So God gave them the reward of this world, and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. God loves the doers of good.
3|149|O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you end up losers.
3|150|God is your Master, and He is the Best of Helpers.
3|151|We will throw terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they attribute to God partners for which He revealed no sanction. Their lodging is the Fire. Miserable is the lodging of the evildoers.
3|152|God has fulfilled His promise to you, and you defeated them by His leave; until when you faltered, and disputed the command, and disobeyed after He had shown you what you like. Some of you want this world, and some of you want the next. Then He turned you away from them, to test you; but He pardoned you. God is Gracious towards the believers.
3|153|Remember when you fled, not caring for anyone, even though the Messenger was calling you from your rear. Then He repaid you with sorrow upon sorrow, so that you would not grieve over what you missed, or for what afflicted you. God is Informed of what you do.
3|154|Then after the setback, He sent down security upon you. Slumber overcame some of you, while others cared only for themselves, thinking of God thoughts that were untrue—thoughts of ignorance—saying, “Is anything up to us?” Say, “Everything is up to God.” They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you. And they say, “If it was up to us, none of us would have been killed here.” Say, “Even if you Had stayed in your homes, those destined to be killed would have marched into their death beds.” God thus tests what is in your minds, and purifies what is in your hearts. God knows what the hearts contain.

This verse and this area of the Quran deals with predestination and free will. There is a very subtle argument being put forward which has been misunderstood by many. Some read part of the verses and reach the conclusion that there is absolute free will, and others read the verses and think everything is predestined. The reality is in between. We have free will in the sense that we can choose our intentions, however we cant just choose to fly, or get younger or not die. So certain things are predestined, partly due to the causal nature of this universe and the designed aspect of the test we are in. For example , Allah has said that we will die, it is predestined for us, it will happen, there is no option to live on Earth forever. Read more here.

3|155|Those of you who turned back on the day when the two armies clashed—it was Satan who caused them to backslide, on account of some of what they have earned. But God has forgiven them. God is Forgiving and Prudent.
3|156|O you who believe! Do not be like those who disbelieved, and said of their brethren who marched in the land, or went on the offensive, “Had they stayed with us, they would not have died or been killed.” So that God may make it a cause of regret in their hearts. God gives life and causes death. God is Seeing of what you do.
3|157|If you are killed in the cause of God, or die—forgiveness and mercy from God are better than what they hoard.
3|158|If you die, or are killed—to God you will be gathered up.
3|159|It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.
3|160|If God supports you, there is none who can overcome you. But if He fails you, who is there to help you after Him? So in God let the believers put their trust.
3|161|It is not for a prophet to act dishonestly. Whoever acts dishonestly will bring his dishonesty on the Day of Resurrection. Then every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.
3|162|Is someone who pursues God’s approval the same as someone who incurs God’s wrath and his refuge is Hell—the miserable destination?
3|163|They have different ranks with God, and God is Seeing of what they do.
3|164|God has blessed the believers, as He raised up among them a messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His revelations, and purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and wisdom; although before that they were in evident error.
3|165|And when a calamity befell you, even after you had inflicted twice as much, you said, “How is this?” Say, “It is from your own selves.” God is Able to do all things.
3|166|What befell you on the day the two armies clashed was with God’s permission; that He may know the believers.
3|167|And that He may know the hypocrites. And it was said to them, “Come, fight in the cause of God, or contribute.” They said, “If we knew how to fight, we would have followed you.” On that day they were closer to infidelity than they were to faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts; but God knows what they hide.
3|168|Those who said of their brethren, as they stayed behind, “Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed.” Say, “Then avert death from yourselves, if you are truthful.”
3|169|Do not consider those killed in the cause of God as dead. In fact, they are alive, at their Lord, well provided for.

Martyrs are alive, we cant perceive them as alive, but they are alive in some form, refer also to 2:154

3|170|Delighting in what God has given them out of His grace, and happy for those who have not yet joined them; that they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
3|171|They rejoice in grace from God, and bounty, and that God will not waste the reward of the faithful.
3|172|Those who responded to God and the Messenger, despite the persecution they had suffered. For the virtuous and the pious among them is a great reward.
3|173|Those to whom the people have said, “The people have mobilized against you, so fear them.” But this only increased them in faith, and they said, “God is enough for us; He is the Excellent Protector.”

H 3338, CH 52, h 6 in Al Kafi

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from certain individuals of his people from Muhammad ibn al-Faraj who has said the following: “Once abu Ja’far ibn al-Rida AS wrote to me and instructed me with this supplication saying, ‘Whoever recites it after the morning prayer, his wish will come true with ease and Allah will suffice him: “(I begin) in the name of Allah and with Allah. O Lord, grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad and his family. I plead before Allah to keep my affairs in trust with Him, Allah knows well (His) servants. ‘Allah protected him (the believer among the people of Pharoah) against the evil of what they had planned against him. . . .’(40:44,45) ‘No one deserves to be worshiped except You, You are free of all defects. I have been unjust to myself.’ (21:87) ‘We answered his prayer and saved him from sorrow and thus, We save the believing people.’(21:88) ‘. . . Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best representative.’ (3:173) ‘They returned with the bounties of Allah and additional favors without being touched by evil. . . .’ (3:174), it is as Allah wills, there are no means and no power without Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. “It is as Allah wills, not as people will. It is as Allah wills even though people may dislike it. Sufficient for me is the Lord instead of those cherished, sufficient for me is the Creator instead of the creatures, sufficient for me is the provider of sustenance instead of the recipients of sustenance, the One Who has always been sufficient for me from the time I existed, sufficient for me is Allah besides Whom no one deserves to be worshiped, before Him I place my trust and He is the Lord of the great Throne.’ “The Imam said, ‘When you complete an obligatory prayer say, ‘I have accepted the fact that Allah is my Lord, Muhammad is the Holy Prophet, Islam is the religion, the Holy Quran is the Book and so and so . . . (mention your ‘A’immah) are my ‘A’immah. O Lord, protect Your friend, (whom You have granted Divine Authority) so and so . . . (mention the twelfth Imam) from all directions, front, back, right, left, above and below, grant him a long life and make him the one who will rise with Divine Authority to support Your religion, show him what he loves and is the delight to his eyes, in his own person, his descendants, his family, belongings, his followers and his enemies. Show them (his enemies) what frightens them and show him in them what he loves and be the delight to his eyes, grant the cure for our suffering chests (hearts) and the chests of the believing people.’

The Imam said, ‘The Holy Prophet after completing a prayer would say, “O Lord, forgive me for what I have done and what I will do, what I have hidden, and what I have done in public and forgive my excesses against my own self and that about which You know better than I do. O Lord You are the One Who can move things forward or backwards with Your knowledge of the unseen and through Your power over all creatures. I pray to grant me life as long as it is in my best interest and cause me to die when it is in my best interest. I plead before You to grant me a sense of concern about You in private and in public, to say the words of the truth in anger or happiness and to economize in poverty and in wealth. I plead before You for bounties that will not vanish and such delight of the eyes that will not discontinue. I plead before You to make me be happy with (Your) determination, with the blessing of death after life, the comfort of life after death, the pleasure of the look at Your face (things that lead to You), the excitement of seeing You, meeting You without being harmed or suffer harmfulness or the misfortune of straying. O Lord, beautify us with the beauty of belief and help us to be guided guides. O Lord, grant us guidance in the matters of those whom You have guided. O Lord, I plead before You for determination in understanding, steadfastness in the affairs, and good understanding. I plead before You for the opportunity to thank You for Your bounties, Your granting good health and yielding to Your right. I plead before You O Lord, to grant me a peaceful heart, and a truthful tongue. I beg You for forgiveness for that which You know. I seek protection with You against the evil of that which You know; You know and we do not know. You have the knowledge of the unseen.’”

3|174|So they came back with grace from God, and bounty, and no harm having touched them. They pursued what pleases God. God possesses immense grace.
3|175|That is only Satan frightening his partisans; so do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers.
3|176|And do not be saddened by those who rush into disbelief. They will not harm God in the least. God desires to give them no share in the Hereafter. A terrible torment awaits them.
3|177|Those who exchange blasphemy for faith will not harm God in the least. A painful torment awaits them.
3|178|Those who disbelieve should not assume that We respite them for their own good. In fact, We only respite them so that they may increase in sinfulness. A humiliating torment awaits them.
3|179|God will not leave the believers as you are, without distinguishing the wicked from the sincere. Nor will God inform you of the future, but God elects from among His messengers whom He wills. So believe in God and His messengers. If you believe and practice piety, you will have a splendid reward.
3|180|Those who withhold what God has given them of his bounty should not assume that is good for them. In fact, it is bad for them. They will be encircled by their hoardings on the Day of Resurrection. To God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, and God is well acquainted with what you do.
3|181|God has heard the statement of those who said, “God is poor, and we are rich.” We will write down what they said, and their wrongful killing of the prophets; and We will say, “Taste the torment of the burning.”
3|182|“This is on account of what your hands have forwarded, and because God is not unjust towards the creatures.”
3|183|Those who said, “God has made a covenant with us, that we shall not believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering to be consumed by fire.” Say, “Messengers have come to you before me with proofs, and with what you asked for; so why did you assassinate them, if you are truthful?”
3|184|If they accuse you of lying, messengers before you were accused of lying. They came with the proofs, and the Psalms, and the Illuminating Scripture.
3|185|Every soul will have a taste of death, and you will receive your recompense on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is swayed from the Fire, and admitted to Paradise, has won. The life of this world is merely enjoyment of delusion.
3|186|You will be tested through your possessions and your persons; and you will hear from those who received the Scripture before you, and from the idol worshipers, much abuse. But if you persevere and lead a righteous life—that indeed is a mark of great determination.
3|187|God received a pledge from those who were given the Scripture: “You shall proclaim it to the people, and not conceal it.” But they disregarded it behind their backs, and exchanged it for a small price. What a miserable exchange they made.
3|188|Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done—do not think they can evade the punishment. They will have a painful punishment.
3|189|To God belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. God has power over all things.
3|190|In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, are signs for people of understanding.
3|191|Those who remember God while standing, and sitting, and on their sides; and they reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create this in vain, glory to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

With the previous ayat, the universe has been created, it has not been in existence for eternity. Also implies the fact the universe is here, it must have a purpose.

3|192|“Our Lord, whomever You commit to the Fire, You have disgraced. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.”
3|193|“Our Lord, we have heard a caller calling to the faith: `Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, and remit our misdeeds, and make us die in the company of the virtuous.”
3|194|“Our Lord, and give us what You have promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Surely You never break a promise.”
3|195|And so their Lord answered them: “I will not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female. You are one of another. For those who emigrated, and were expelled from their homes, and were persecuted because of Me, and fought and were killed—I will remit for them their sins, and will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow—a reward from God. With God is the ultimate reward.”
3|196|Do not be impressed by the disbelievers’ movements in the land.
3|197|A brief enjoyment, then their abode is Hell. What a miserable resort.
3|198|As for those who feared their Lord: for them will be gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever—hospitality from God. What God possesses is best for the just.
3|199|Among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in God, and in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them. They are humble before God, and they do not sell God’s revelations for a cheap price. These will have their reward with their Lord. God is swift in reckoning.
3|200|O you who believe! Be patient, and advocate patience, and be united, and revere God, so that you may thrive.
