Tafsir 31. Luqman

1. الم
31|1|Alif, Lam, Meem.
31|2|These are the Verses of the Wise Book.
31|3|A guide and a mercy for the righteous.
31|4|Those who observe the prayer, and pay the obligatory charity, and are certain of the Hereafter.
31|5|These are upon guidance from their Lord. These are the successful.
31|6|Among the people is he who trades in distracting tales; intending, without knowledge, to lead away from God’s way, and to make a mockery of it. These will have a humiliating punishment.

H 8508, Ch. 36, h 1
A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu
Basir who has said the following:
“I once asked Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the legal status of the income from female music
playing singers. He (the Imam) said, ‘Such singing and playing music of females where men are also
present is unlawful. There is no offense in inviting female singers on the occasion of a wedding
program. It is in the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “Among people are those who
purchase useless talk to make people lose the path of Allah.” (31:6)’”
H 8510, Ch. 36, h 3
Ahmad ibn Muhammad from has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabiy from Ayyub
al-Hurr from abu Basir who has said the following:
“Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The payment that a female singer receives from singing
in wedding ceremonies is lawful, provided men do not attend her singing program.’”

31|7|And when Our Verses are recited to him, he turns away in pride, as though he did not hear them, as though there is deafness in his ears. So inform him of a painful punishment.
31|8|As for those who believe and do good deeds—for them are the Gardens of Bliss.
31|9|Dwelling therein forever. The promise of God is true. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
31|10|He created the heavens without pillars that you can see, and placed stabilizers on earth lest it shifts with you, and scattered throughout it all kinds of creatures. And from the sky We sent down water, and caused to grow therein of every noble pair.
31|11|Such is God’s creation. Now show me what those besides Him have created. In fact, the wicked are in obvious error.
31|12|We endowed Luqman with wisdom: “Give thanks to God.” Whoever is appreciative—is appreciative for the benefit of his own soul. And whoever is unappreciative—God is Sufficient and Praiseworthy.
31|13|When Luqman said to his son, as he advised him, “O my son, do not associate anything with God, for idolatry is a terrible wrong.”
31|14|We have entrusted the human being with the care of his parents. His mother carried him through hardship upon hardship, weaning him in two years. So give thanks to Me, and to your parents. To Me is the destination.

H 1156, Ch. 108, h 79
Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from
Bastam ibn Murra from Ishaq ibn Hassa’n from al-Haytham ibn Waqid from Ali
ibn al-Husayn al-‘Abdi from Sa‘d al-’Iskaf from Asbagh ibn Nubata that he
asked Amir al-Mu’minin Ali, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said
the following:
“About the words of Allah, the Most High: ‘. . . To give thanks
to Me first and then your parents, to Me all things proceed,’
(31:14) the Imam said, ‘The parents who must be thanked are
the ones who provide knowledge, and leave wisdom as their
legacy and people are commanded to obey them. Allah then has
said, ‘ . . to Me all things proceed.’ (31:14) People proceed to
Allah and the parents are the guides to such goal. Allah then has
addressed ibn Hantama and his friend saying in particular and in
general, ‘If they try to force you to consider things as My
partners, . . .’ (31:15) [meaning partners with the executor of the
will of the Holy Prophet, recipient of divine supreme covenant],
or try to make you deviate from the command to obey him (Ali,
recipient of divine supreme covenant), then do not obey them
(parents in general, ibn Hantamah and friends in particular) and
do not listen to them. Then Allah directed His words to the case
of the parents: ‘Maintain lawful relations with them in this
world. . . .’ (31:15) It says to propagate the virtue and excellence
of the (spiritual) parents and call people to their guidance which
is also mentioned in these words of Allah, ‘. . . and follow the
path of those who turn in repentance to Me. To Me you will all
return. . . .’ (31:15)
“The Imam said, ‘To Allah then to us. You must be pious
before Allah and do not disobey the parents. To please them is to
please Allah and to cause them anger is to cause anger to
Allah.’”

31|15|But if they strive to have you associate with Me something of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But keep them company in this life, in kindness, and follow the path of him who turns to Me. Then to Me is your return; and I will inform you of what you used to do.
31|16|“O my son, even if it were the weight of a mustard-seed, in a rock, or in the heavens, or on earth, God will bring it to light. God is Kind and Expert.

H 2409, CH 107, h 10
Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla ibn Muhammad from al-
Washsha’ from Ali ibn abu Hamza from abu Basir who has said the following:
“I heard abu Ja’far, recipient of divine supreme covenant,
saying, ‘Stay away from insignificant sins because there is
demand for them. One of you will say, ‘I sin and ask
forgiveness.’ Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said,
‘It is We who bring the dead to life and record the deeds of
human beings and their consequences (of continual effects). We
keep everything recorded in an illustrious Imam (leader).’
(36:12) Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, in the words of
Luqman, has also said, ‘My son, Allah keeps the records of all
the good and evil deeds, even if they are as small as a grain of
mustard seed, hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth.
Allah is subtle and All-aware.’” (31:16)

31|17|O my son, observe the prayer, advocate righteousness, forbid evil, and be patient over what has befallen you. These are of the most honorable traits.
31|18|And do not treat people with arrogance, nor walk proudly on earth. God does not love the arrogant showoffs.
31|19|And moderate your stride, and lower your voice. The most repulsive of voices is the donkey’s voice.”
31|20|Do you not see how God placed at your service everything in the heavens and the earth? How He showered you with His blessings, both outward and inward? Yet among the people is he who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an enlightening Scripture.
31|21|And when it is said to them, “Follow what God has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we follow what we found our parents devoted to.” Even if Satan is calling them to the suffering of the Blaze?
31|22|Whoever submits himself wholly to God, and is a doer of good, has grasped the most trustworthy handle. With God rests the outcome of all events.
31|23|Whoever disbelieves—let not his disbelief sadden you. To Us is their return. Then We will inform them of what they did. God knows what lies within the hearts.
31|24|We give them a little comfort; then We compel them to a harsh torment.
31|25|And if you ask them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” They will say, “God.” Say, “Praise be to God.” But most of them do not know.

H 1458, CH 4, h 4
Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from
‘Udhayna from Zurara from abu Ja’far, recipient of divine supreme covenant,
who has said the following:
“I asked him, recipient of divine supreme covenant, about the
words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, ‘They are humble
before Allah and they do not consider anything as partners of
Allah.’ The Imam said, ‘Humbleness comes from the nature
with which Allah has created all people and there is no change in
the creation of Allah.’ The Imam also said, ‘He created them
with the ability to know Him.’ Zurara has said, ‘I then asked him
about the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious:
“(Consider), when your Lord took from the backs of the children
of Adam all of their offspring. He asked them to bear a
testimony. (Testimony to the fact that) when He asked them all,
‘Am I not your Lord?’ They all said, ‘Yes, You are our Lord.’”
(7:172) The Imam said, “This happened when Allah took all
descendents of Adam – who were to be born to the Day of
Judgment – out from his back. They all came out in the form of
small particles. He then introduced and showed Himself to them.
Had this not happened no one could know his Lord.” The Imam
said, “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Every newborn is born
with the nature (to believe in Allah).’ It means (He created them)
with knowledge that Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, is his/her
Creator and so is His words, ‘When you ask them, “Who has
created the heavens and the earth?” They will certainly say,
‘Allah has created them.’”’” (31:25)

31|26|To God belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. God is the Rich, the Praised.
31|27|If all the trees on earth were pens, filled by the ocean, with seven more oceans besides, the Words of God would not run out. God is Majestic and Wise.
31|28|Your creation and your resurrection are only as a single soul. God is Hearing and Seeing.
31|29|Have you not seen how God merges the night into the day, and merges the day into the night? That He subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a stated term? And that God is Cognizant of everything you do?
31|30|That is because God is the Reality, and what they worship besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Exalted, the Supreme.
31|31|Have you not seen how the ships sail through the sea, by the grace of God, to show you of His wonders? In that are signs for every persevering, thankful person.
31|32|When waves, like canopies, cover them, they call upon God, devoting their religion to Him. But when He has delivered them to dry land, some of them waver. No one renounces Our revelations except the treacherous blasphemer.

When people get close to death, or experience fear, they remember God. When they are enjoying life and dont fear the day when they will be held to account, then they forget God.

31|33|O people! Be conscious of your Lord, and dread a Day when no parent can avail his child, nor can a child avail his parent, in anything. The promise of God is true. Therefore, do not let this life deceive you, nor let illusions deceive you regarding God.
31|34|With God rests the knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and He knows what the wombs contain. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. God is All-Knowing, Well-Informed.
