Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid (RA) said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al- Saffar said on the authority of Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abu al-Khattab, on the authority of Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl that:

I asked Abu al-Hasan al-Kazim (AS): “Did the Messenger of Allah (SA) see his Lord, the Mighty and High?” Hence, he (AS) replied: “Yes, he saw Him by means of his heart. Have you not heard Allah, the Might and High that the heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw [53:11]. That is to say, he did not see Him with his eyes, but he saw Him with the heart.”

Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya who said the following:

“Abu Qurrah (Musa ibn Tariq al-Yamani al-Zabudi (died 203A.H./818A.D.), a narrator of Hadith, asked me to take him to abu al-Hassan al-Rida (a.s), I sought permission from the Imam (a.s), and an audience was granted. He asked the Imam about what is lawful and unlawful and the rules in Islamic laws. His questions came to Oneness of Allah. Abu Qurrah said, ‘We (the narrators of Hadith) narrate that Allah the Almighty has divided His being seen, al-Ru’ya, and His speech, al-Kalam, between the two prophets. He gave Musa (Moses) the opportunity to hear His speech. He granted to Prophet Muhammad Õáì Çááå Úáíå æÂáå æÓáã, the opportunity to see Him.’

“Imam abu al-Hassan (a.s), said, ‘If it is as you say then who was it that conveyed the message from Allah to the two heavy communities, namely, mankind and the Jinn in the following words of the Holy Quran: “. . . the eyes cannot comprehend Him”, (6:103) “They cannot limit Him through their knowledge,” (20:110) and “There is nothing similar to Him.” (42:11) ‘Was it not Muhammad Õáì Çááå Úáíå æÂáå æÓáã, who conveyed the above verses,’ asked the Imam (a.s),?’

“Abu Qurrah then replied, ‘Yes, He was Prophet Muhammad Õáì Çááå Úáíå æÂáå æÓáã,’ The Imam said, ‘How can a person; who brought such messages to all creatures and told them that he has brought such messages from Allah and called them to Allah by His commands and said, “The eyes cannot comprehend Him,” (6:103) “They cannot limit Him through their knowledge” (20:110) and “There is nothing similar to Him;” (42:11) say, “I saw Him with my own eyes? I did limit Him in my knowledge and that He is similar to a man.” Should you not be ashamed of yourselves? Even the atheist has not said that the Prophet first brought one thing from Allah and then announced from Him other things contrary to the first.’

“Abu Qurrah then said, ‘Does Allah Himself not say, “Indeed he (the Prophet) saw him in another descent?”’ (53: 13) Imam abu al-Hassan (a.s), said, ‘The other verses point out what the Prophet actually saw. Allah has said, “His heart did not lie about what he saw,” (53: 11) It means that the heart of Muhammad did not belie what his eyes saw. Therefore, Allah in the subsequent verse has said, “Indeed he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.” (53:18) The signs of Allah are different from Allah Himself. Allah has also said, “They cannot limit Him in their knowledge.” (20:110) If the eyes could see Him, then people might limit Him in their knowledge and He could be fully defined.’

“Abu Qurrah asked, ‘Do you disregard Hadith?’ Imam abu alHassan (a.s), replied, ‘If Ahadith are contrary to Holy Quran, I disregard them. Besides, all Muslims believe that Allah cannot be limited by (anyone’s) knowledge, that eyes cannot see Him and that nothing is similar to Him.’”

And from Muhammad bin Abbas, from Muhammad Bin Hamam, from Muhammad Bin Ismail, from Ays Bin Dawood,

‘Abu Al-Hassan (a.s) Al-Musa (a.s) Bin Ja’far (a.s), from his (a.s) father (a.s), from his (a.s) grandfather (a.s), from Ali (a.s) regarding the Words of the Mighty and Majestic [53:16] When the Lote Tree overwhelmed what it overwhelmed. He (a.s) said: ‘When the Prophet (s.a.w.a.s) went on Ascension to his (s.a.w.a.s) Lord, he said (about it): ‘Jibraeel paused with me in the presence of a Magnificent Tree. I had never seen the like of it before. Upon each of its branches was an Angel, and upon each of its leaves was an Angel, and upon each of its fruit was an Angel, and it was Radiating Light from the Light of Allah Mighty and Majestic.

Jibraeel said: ‘This here is The Lote Tree (المنتهدى سددرة .(The Prophetsas before you have ended up to here, then they never exceeded it, and you exceed it, and if Allah so Desires, He would Show you from the Greatest Signs. Be assured that Allah the High would Support you to be steadfast until He Completes His Prestige (upon you), and you journey to His Nearness’.

Then I ascended to be underneath the Throne, so a green flap approached me, the beauty of which I cannot describe, so it raised me by the Permission of my Lord. I went to be in His Presence, and the voices of the Angels and their sounds was cut off from me (a.s), and the fears and the concerns went away from me and I calmed myself and was encouraged, and I extended myself and was overcome by the delightfulness and the serenity of it all, and I thought that the whole of the creation had died out, and I did not see anyone apart from myself from His Creatures. So I was left (in that situation) for as long as Allah so Desired to. Then He Returned my soul back to me, so I came around, and it was a Guidance from my Lord that my eyes were closed, and every vision and look was covered. So I went on to visualise with my heart just as I visualise with my eyes. But it was more extensive and more profound, and these are the Words of the High [53:11] The heart did not belie what it saw [53:18] He saw of the greatest Signs of his Lord. But rather, I was visualising a corridor of Light like a needle, between me and my Lord, which the sight cannot bear’.

So my Lord Blessed and High Called out to me: “O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)!” I said: ‘Here I am my Lord, and my God, and my Master!’ He Said: “Do you understand your worth in my Presence, and your place, and your status?” I said: ‘Yes, my Master!’ He Said: “O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)! Do you understand your place from Me and the place of your descendants?’ I said: ‘Yes, my Master!’

He Said: “So do you know, O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s), regarding what the High Assembly quarrelled?’ I said: ‘O Lord, You are more Knowing and more Wise, and You are the Knower of the Hidden matters’. He Said: “They quarrelled regarding the Levels, and the Rewards. So, do you know what are these Levels and the Rewards?” I said: ‘You are more Knowing my Master, and more Wise’. He Said: “The performance of the ablution during the obligations, and the walking upon the feet to the congregation with you, and with your children (a.s), and the awaiting for the Prayer after the Prayer, and disclosure of the greetings, and the feeding of the food, and the Tahajjud (Prayer) at night when the people sleep”.
َ
Then I Said: “[2:285] The Rasool believes in what has been Revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the Believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Rasools; We do not disregard His Rasuls; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Your Forgiveness (do we crave), and to You is the eventual journey’. He Said: “you speak the truth O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)! [2:286] Allah does not Impose upon any soul a duty but to the extent of its ability; for it is (the benefit of) what it has earned and upon it (the evil of) what it has wrought: Our Lord! do not Punish us if we forget or make a mistake; Our Lord! do not Lay on us a burden as You Laid on those before us, Our Lord do not Impose upon us that which we have not the strength to bear; and Pardon us and Grant us Protection and have Mercy on us, You art our Protector, so Help us against the unbelieving people. That is for you and your descendants, O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)!” I said: ‘Yes! my Lord, I am at your Disposal and at Your Service, my Master, and my God’.

He Said: “I Ask you, although I am more Knowing of it than you are, who is the one (a.s) whom you have left behind (in your place) in the earth after you?’ I said: ‘The best of my Family, my brother and cousin, and  helper of Your Religion, and the angry one at those who permit Your Prohibitions, and for the sake of Your Prophet (s.a.w.a.s), has the anger of the angry, Ali (a.s) Bin Abu Talib (a.s)’.

He Said: “you have spoke the truth, O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)! I Chose you for the Prophet-hood, and Sent you with the Message, and Selected Ali (a.s) with the preaching and the martyrdom upon your community, and Made him (a.s) as a Proof in the earth with you and after your. And he (a.s) is the Light of the Former ones, and the Guardian of the one who obeys Me, and he (a.s) is the ‘Word’ which is necessitated upon the pious. O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)! And get him (a.s) married to Fatima (a.s), for he (a.s) is your successor, and your inheritor, and your Vizier, and washer of your body, and helper of your Religion, and the murdered one upon My Sunnah and your Sunnah, and it would be the wretched one of this community who would kill him (a.s)”.

Rasool-Allah (s.a.w.a.s) said: ‘Then my Lord Commanded me with matters and things, and Commanded me that I keep these concealed, and did not Permit me for informing my companions about these. Then the (green) flap raised me (a.s), and took me back to Sidrat Al-Muntaha to be with Jibraeel, who was waiting for me underneath it. Then he entered me into the Garden of Shelter (المأوى جنة .(So I saw my dwelling place, and your (a.s) dwelling, O Ali (a.s), in it.

While Jibraeel was speaking to me, I noticed a Light from the Light of Allah. So I looked at it, and it was like a needle, similar to what I saw the first time. So my Lord, Majestic is His Majesty Called out to me: “O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)!” I said: ‘Here I am, my Lord, my God, my Master?’ He Said: “My Mercy Precedes My Anger for you and for your descendants (a.s). you are of My qualities from My creatures, and you are My Trustworthy one, and My Beloved, and My Rasool (s.a.w.a.s), and My Honour, and My Majesty. Even if all of My creatures were to doubt regarding you, for the blink of an eye, or (try to find) faults in you, or (try to find) fault in your descendants (a.s), I would Enter all of them into the Fire, and I  would not Care. O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s)! Ali (a.s) is the Amir-ul-Momineen (a.s), and the Chief of the Rasools, and the Guide of the Resplendent to the Garden of Bliss, father of the grandsons (السبطين (the Chiefs of the youths of My Paradise, the ones (who will be) murdered by injustice”.

Then He Obligated upon me the Prayer, and whatever the Blessed and High Wanted, and I was closer to Him in the first time, similar to what is in between the two ends of the bow. So these are the Words of the High [53:9] So he was the measure of two bows or even closer’.

53|43|And that it is He who causes laughter and weeping.
53|44|And that it is He who gives death and life.
53|45|And that it is He who created the two kinds—the male and the female.
53|46|From a sperm drop, when emitted.
53|47|And that upon Him is the next existence.
53|48|And that it is He who enriches and impoverishes.
53|49|And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius.
53|50|And that it is He who destroyed the first Aad.
53|51|And Thamood, sparing no one.
53|52|And the people of Noah before that; for they were most unjust and most oppressive.
53|53|And He toppled the ruined cities.
53|54|And covered them with whatever covered them.
53|55|So which of your Lord’s marvels can you deny?
53|56|This is a warning, just like the first warnings.
53|57|The inevitable is imminent.
53|58|None besides God can unveil it.
53|59|Do you marvel at this discourse?
53|60|And laugh, and do not weep?
53|61|Lost in your frivolity?
53|62|So bow down to God, and worship!
