Ar-Ra’d
13|1|Alif, Lam, Meem, Ra. These are the signs of the Scripture. What is revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.
13|2|God is He who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, and then settled on the Throne. And He regulated the sun and the moon, each running for a specified period. He manages all affairs, and He explains the signs, that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.
13|3|And it is He who spread the earth, and placed in it mountains and rivers. And He placed in it two kinds of every fruit. He causes the night to overlap the day. In that are signs for people who reflect.
13|4|On earth are adjacent terrains, and gardens of vines, and crops, and date-palms, from the same root or from distinct roots, irrigated with the same water. We make some taste better than others. In that are proofs for people who reason.
13|5|Should you wonder—the real wonder is their saying: “When we have become dust, will we be in a new creation?” Those are they who defied their Lord. Those are they who will have yokes around their necks. Those are the inhabitants of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
13|6|And they urge you to hasten evil before good, though examples have passed away before them. Your Lord is full of forgiveness towards the people for their wrongdoings, yet your Lord is severe in retribution.
13|7|Those who disbelieve say, “Why was a miracle not sent down to him from his Lord?” You are only a warner, and to every community is a guide.

H 496, Ch. 10, h1 A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al- Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd and Fudala ibn Ayyub from Musa ibn Bakr from al-Fudayl who has said the following: “Once I asked Imam abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, about the meaning of the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious,   ‘For every nation there is a guide.’ (13:7) He (the Imam), recipient of divine supreme covenant, said, ‘Every Imam is the guide in his own century (time).’”

H 497, Ch. 10, h2 Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn abu ‘Umayr from ibn ’Udhayna from Burayd al-‘Ijli who has said the following:  “About the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious,  ‘(Muhammad), you are only a Warner. For every nation there is a guide’ (13:7) Imam abu Ja’far, recipient of divine supreme covenant, has said, ‘The messenger of Allah is the Warner. At all times there is a guide from us who guides people to the teachings of the Holy Prophet, recipient of divine supreme covenant. Of the guides who possess Divine Authority after the Holy Prophet, recipient of divine supreme covenant, is Amir al- Mu’minin, Ali, recipient of divine supreme covenant, and his successors one after the other.’”

H 498, Ch. 10, h3 Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ari has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Jumhur from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Sa‘dan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once I asked Imam abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, about the meaning of the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, ‘(Muhammad), you are only a Warner. For every nation there is a guide.’ (13:7) The Imam, recipient of divine supreme covenant, said, ‘The messenger of Allah is the Warner and (Amir al-Mu’minin) Ali, recipient of divine supreme covenant, is the guide. O abu Muhammad, is there a guide today?’ I said, ‘Yes, may Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, there has always been a guide from you one after the other until this (noble task) is being carried on by your own self.’ “The Imam, recipient of divine supreme covenant, said, ‘O abu Muhammad, may Allah grant you blessings. If a verse (guidance) comes to a man who then dies with his death the verse (guidance) also dies. Even the whole Book dies. (In our case) it (guidance) lives and it continues with new generations as it has done so with the people in the past.’”

H 499, Ch. 10, h4 Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al- Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Safwan from Mansur from ‘Abd al-Rahim al-Qasir who

has said the following: “I asked Imam abu Ja’far, recipient of divine supreme covenant, about the meaning of the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, ‘. . . For every nation there is a guide.’ (13:7) The Imam, recipient of divine supreme covenant, said, ‘The messenger of Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, is the Warner and (Amir al-Mu’minin) Ali, recipient of divine supreme covenant, is the guide. I swear by Allah, that guidance (and Leadership with Divinne Authority) never departed us, it is with us and will always be with us until the Day of Judgment.’”

13|8|God knows what every female bears, and every increase and decrease of the wombs. With Him, everything is by measure.

The Word Qadar does not mean “predestined”, but rather “measured” or allocated. So our genetics, our attributes are not chosen by us, but out of our control, and hence effectively “predestined”.

H 10285, Ch. 6, h 2 It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “I once asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘He knows what every female bears and what the wombs decrease (spoil) and what they increase (dispose).’ (13:8) He (the Imam) said, ‘Decrease’ is every pregnancy before nine months and ‘increase’ is what is more than nine months. Whenever a woman experiences pure blood discharge during her pregnancy a similar number of days are increased in the length of her pregnancy.’”

13|9|The Knower of the Invisible and the Visible; the Grand, the Supreme.
13|10|It is the same; whether one of you conceals his speech, or declares it; whether he goes into hiding by night, or goes out by day.
13|11|He has a succession; before him and behind him, protecting him by God’s command. God does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. And if God wills any hardship for a people, there is no turning it back;, and apart from Him they have no protector.
13|12|It is He who shows you the lightening, causing fear and hope. And He produces the heavy clouds.
13|13|The thunder praises His glory, and so do the angels, in awe of Him. And He sends the thunderbolts, striking with them whomever He wills. Yet they argue about God, while He is Tremendous in might.
13|14|To Him belongs the call to truth. Those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with anything—except as someone who stretches his hands towards water, so that it may reach his mouth, but it does not reach it. The prayers of the unbelievers are only in vain.
13|15|To God prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, in the morning and in the evening.

H 3262, CH 48, h 1 Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Asbat from Ghalib ibn ‘Abd Allah from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, the Most Blessed, the Most High, ‘All in the heavens and the earth prostrate themselves before Allah, either of their own free will or by force, just as do their shadows in the mornings and evenings,’ (13:15) the Imam said, ‘This is prayer before sunrise and before sunset and it is the hour in which prayers are heard.’”

13|16|Say, “Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?” Say, “God.” Say, “Have you taken besides Him protectors, who have no power to profit or harm even themselves?” Say, “Are the blind and the seeing equal? Or are darkness and light equal? Or have they assigned to God associates, who created the likes of His creation, so that the creations seemed to them alike? Say, “God is the Creator of all things, and He is The One, the Irresistible.”
13|17|He sends down water from the sky, and riverbeds flow according to their capacity. The current carries swelling froth. And from what they heat in fire of ornaments or utensils comes a similar froth. Thus God exemplifies truth and falsehood. As for the froth, it is swept away, but what benefits the people remains in the ground. Thus God presents the analogies.
13|18|For those who respond to their Lord is the best. But as for those who do not respond to Him, even if they possessed everything on earth, and twice as much, they could not redeem themselves with it. Those will have the worst reckoning; and their home is Hell—a miserable destination.
13|19|Is he who knows that what was revealed to your from your Lord is the truth, like him who is blind? Only those who reason will remember.
13|20|Those who fulfill the promise to God, and do not violate the agreement.
13|21|And those who join what God has commanded to be joined, and fear their Lord, and dread the dire accounting.

H 1968, CH 64, h 7   Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla ibn Muhammad from al- Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from Ali ibn abu Hamza from abu Basir from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following:  “I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, saying, ‘Kindred relations hold fast to the Throne (of the Lord) and say, “Establish those who establish me and cut off those who cut me off. This is the kindred relation of the family of Muhammad, recipient of divine supreme covenant, that is mentioned in the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘. . . who maintain all the proper relations that Allah has commanded them to maintain. . . ,’ (13:21)  and the kindred relation of all relatives.’”

H 1984, CH 64, h 23  Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Safwan al-Jammal who has said the following:  “Once a conversation took place between abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, and ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Hassan and it had become quite noisy and people had gathered around. They departed from each other that evening. The next morning I was out for a task and I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, at the door of ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Hassan who was saying, ‘O girl, tell abu Muhammad to come out.’ He came out and said, ‘O abu ‘Abd Allah what has made you come out this early?’ He replied, ‘Last night I read a verse of the book of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, and it worried me.’ He asked, ‘Which verse is it?’ He said, ‘It is the words of Allah, Most Glorious, Most Majestic is Whose mention, “. . . who maintain all the proper relations that Allah has commanded them to maintain, who have fear of their Lord and the hardships of the Day of Judgment,” (13:21) He said, ‘You have spoken the truth. It seems I have never come across this verse in the book of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy.’ They both wept and hugged each other.’”

H 8443, Ch. 25, h 1 Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Once, a man came to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, to complain before him (the Imam) against one of his companions. In a little while the defendant came in and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked, ‘Why does so and so complain against you?’ He replied, ‘It is because I asked him for payment of what he owes to me.’ He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then sat straight with anger and said, ‘It seems as if when you demand for payment of what others owe, you do not consider it maltreating him. Consider what Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said in His book, ‘They fear dreadful accounting.’ (13:21) Do you think they fear that Allah will do injustice to them? No, by Allah, that is not the case. They did not fear anything but demand for payment of what is owed to them and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has called it (demand for payment) dreadful accounting, thus one who demands payment has maltreated him (debtor).’

13|22|And those who patiently seek the presence of their Lord, and pray regularly, and spend from Our provisions to them, secretly and openly, and repel evil with good. These will have the Ultimate Home.
13|23|Everlasting Gardens, which they will enter, along with the righteous among their parents, and their spouses, and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate.
13|24|“Peace be upon you, because you endured patiently. How excellent is the Final Home.”
13|25|As for those who violate the promise to God, after pledging to keep it, and sever what God has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on earth—these, the curse will be upon them, and they will have the Worst Home.

H 2817, CH 159, h 7 A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Muhammad ibn ‘Adhafir from certain individuals of his people from Muhammad ibn Muslim or abu Hamza from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, from his father, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following: “Once Ali ibn al-Husayn, recipient of divine supreme covenant, said to me, ‘My son, beware of five kinds of people and do not associate with, speak to and accompany them on the road.’  I then asked, ‘Who are they O father?’ He then said, ‘You must not accompany a lying person; he is like a phantom. He tells you of what, in fact, is faraway to be very near and what, in fact, is near to be very far. You must not associate with a sinful person; he may sell you for a single loaf or even less to this or that person. You must not associate with a stingy person; he leaves you out in the cold in financial matters in your desperate conditions. You must not associate with a silly person; he may want to benefit you instead he causes you harm. “You must not associate one who has failed to maintain good relations with relatives; I have found him as condemned in three places of the book of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘If you ignore the commands of Allah, would you then also spread evil in the land and sever the ties of kinship? (47:22) Allah has condemned these people and made them deaf, dumb, and blind.’ (47:23) ‘Those who disregard their covenant with Allah after He has taken such a pledge from them, who sever the proper relations that Allah has commanded them to establish, and those who spread evil in the land will have Allah’s condemnation instead of reward and will face the most terrible end.’ (13:25) ‘. . . The evil doers (2:26) who break their established covenant with Him and the relations He has commanded to be kept and who spread evil in the land; these are the ones who lose a great deal.’” (2:27)

13|26|God dispenses the provisions to whomever He wills, and restricts. And they delight in the worldly life; yet the worldly life, compared to the Hereafter, is only enjoyment.
13|27|Those who disbelieve say, “If only a miracle was sent down to him from his Lord.” Say, “God leads astray whomever He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever repents.”
13|28|Those who believe, and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of God. Surely, it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find comfort.”
13|29|For those who believe and do righteous deeds—for them is happiness and a beautiful return.
13|30|Thus We sent you among a community before which other communities have passed away, that you may recite to them what We revealed to you. Yet they deny the Benevolent One. Say, “He is my Lord; there is no god but He; in Him I trust, and to Him is my repentance.”
13|31|Even if there were a Quran, by which mountains could be set in motion, or by which the earth could be shattered, or by which the dead could be made to speak. In fact, every decision rests with God. Did the believers not give up and realize that had God willed, He would have guided all humanity? Disasters will continue to strike those who disbelieve, because of their deeds, or they fall near their homes, until God’s promise comes true. God never breaks a promise.
13|32|Messengers before you were ridiculed, but I granted the disbelievers respite, and then I seized them. What a punishment it was!
13|33|Is He who is watchful over the deeds of every soul? Yet they ascribe associates to God. Say, “Name them! Or are you informing Him of something on earth He does not know, or is it a show of words?” In fact, the scheming of those who disbelieve is made to appear good to them, and they are averted from the path. Whomever God misguides has no guide.
13|34|There is for them torment in the worldly life, but the torment of the Hereafter is harsher. And they have no defender against God.
13|35|The likeness of the Garden promised to the righteous: rivers flowing beneath it; its food is perpetual, and so is its shade. Such is the sequel for those who guard against evil, but the sequel of the disbelievers is the Fire.
13|36|Those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice in what was revealed to you, while some factions reject parts of it. Say, “I am commanded to worship God, and to never associate anything with Him. To Him I invite, and to Him is my return.”
13|37|Thus We revealed it an Arabic code of law. Were you to follow their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have neither ally nor defender against God.
13|38|We sent messengers before you, and We assigned for them wives and offspring. No messenger could bring a sign except with the permission of God. For every era is a scripture.
13|39|God abolishes whatever He wills, and He affirms. With Him is the source of the Scripture.

H 361, Ch. 24, h2 Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim and Hafs ibn al-Bakhtari and others from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, ‘Allah establishes or effaces whatever He wants, . . .’  (13:39) the Imam, recipient of divine supreme covenant, said,  ‘Can anything be effaced without being established? Can anything be established unless it is after its non-existence?’”

13|40|Whether We show you some of what We have promised them, or We cause you to die—your duty is to inform, and Ours is the reckoning.
13|41|Do they not see how We deal with the earth, diminishing it at its edges? God judges; and nothing can hold back His judgment. And He is quick to settle accounts.

H 76, Ch. 7, h6 A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from the person who he mentioned from Jabir from abu Ja’far, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following:   “Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn, recipient of divine supreme covenant, would say, ‘My soul shows generosity in accepting the quickening of our death or being murdered. It is due to the words of Allah that say, ‘Have they not considered that We have taken over the land and reduced its borders?’ (13:41) The reference here is to the death of the scholars.”

13|42|Those before them planned, but the entire plan is up to God. He knows what every soul earns. Those who disbelieve will know to whom the Ultimate Home is.
13|43|Those who disbelieve say, “You are not a messenger.” Say, “God is a sufficient witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Scripture.”

H 607, Ch. 35, h6 Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn Yahya from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from those he mentioned, both of them from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ibn ’Udhayna from Burayd ibn Mu‘awiya who has said the following: “Once I asked abu Ja‘far, recipient of divine supreme covenant, about the meaning of the following verse: ‘. . . Say, Allah and those who have the knowledge of the Book are sufficient witness (to my prophecy).’ (13:43) “The Imam said, ‘It is a reference to us. Ali (ibn abu Talib), recipient of divine supreme covenant, is the first among us and the most excellent and the best among us after the Holy Prophet, recipient of divine supreme covenant.’”
